Cratermaze (T16)

The first time I played this I was so bored. It's a scrolling maze game where you dig holes to trap monsters. Ho-hum. Then I cranked up the difficulty (to "difficult") and it was a revelation. Suddenly it was like a single-player Bomberman style survival game. All sorts of special items sp...

Should Loot Boxes Be Regulated?

I was reading this article about Loot Boxes being regulated and the industry pushing back. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/05/trade-group-prez-loot-box-regulation-challenges-our-freedom-to-innovate/ On one hand, I'm generally against the govt trying to tell us how to run out lives. On the other ...

I don't think you can compare watching a movie or listening to an album to completing a lengthy video game. I mean, that could be 2 hours versus 50 hours. A better analogy might be watching a television series. I have friends who recommend a series based on just a few episodes they've seen. Why shou...

Re: Capcom releasing Resident Evil 7 on Switch, In the Dumbest Way Imaginable

What amazes me is that there are people out there who are perfectly OK with this business model. Maybe they are new to gaming? It used to be that your purchased a game and you owned the media. The act of playing it was your business. And when you didn't want it any more, you could sell it. With this...

I think it also depends on the review site. If you're a professional working for IGN or Forbes, yeah I'd expect you to finish the game and write a full five page report and include at least a half dozen screenshots along with a video clip. This site however has established itself as a "quick an...

Re: 2018/5/14: Playstation 3: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

I don't review many RPGs, but when I review games my review generally solidifies in the first few hours - often sooner. I can't recall a time when my opinion changed significantly based on what happened in the last 50% of a game. I mean, a story can only carry so much weight. A great ending isn't go...

Re: Neo Geo (Simple games)

This is a reflection of modern game thinking, which is that the whole point is "getting to the end". In the old school, playing the game is a joy it of itself. That's why we can play old games over and over, indefinitely. And it's not just about seeing everything a game has to offer, it's ...
