Re: Early to Mid 1995

It was a wonderful time to be a gamer, back before the Playstation days. Sega released the Saturn early, to our shock and surprise. And if you jumped in early, Virtua Fighter was there in all it's untextured glory, with naked polygons clipping in and out of view. Daytona introduced us all to the pop...

Re: Early to Mid 1995

Worst generation ever? Compared to Pong, Pong, and more Pong? And no, Pitfall 2 and Metroid can't begin to compete with the depth and elegance of Symphony of the Night, Majora's Mask and Ocarina shame Adventure and The Legend of Zelda. and I'll never forget the magic of creating my own characters fo...

Re: 2018/2/18: Playstation: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII

The story's subjective - there's a lot of creativity there, and some of the beats do land - but I called it a fanfiction of itself, because I've dated women who write fanfiction, and FFVIII includes many of the pitfalls amateur writers start with. The biggest one being that they really neglect to fl...

Re: 2018/2/18: Playstation: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII

I don't know...VIII's review feels incomplete to me. It ably tackles the experimental gameplay..except for the part where the enemies level up as you do. And the detailed graphics come at the cost of a low resolution, even by PSOne standards. It's as often eye piercingly ugly as it is breath-takingl...

A thoughtful conversation that covers all the relevant issues involved, without anyone tearing each other apart?

I wish this was the direction the information age had gone...

Re: 2017/12/30: Nintendo 64: NHL 99

Thanks for these sports reviews. I've generally avoided the entire genre, but you provide a clear user-friendly explanation about the differences between a good game, an average one, and a bad title that has me rethinking the entire genre. At the very least, I'm tempted to play my first post NES hoc...

Re: Pick only one console per generation.

I don't think anyone's as angry about your flouting the extremely nebulous categories of console generations as you seem to enjoy imagining them to be. It's all just convenient shorthand for grouping the biggest names. I doubt any of the regulars are. They generally seem pretty cool about things. B...

Re: Pick only one console per generation.

I can always swap my answer out for a Sega CDX, which is a single console in the exact same way a Saturn was.

But yeah, if we count the Sega CD as a completely different platform, than I'd love to know why Turbo CD games don't get their own listing on this site?

Re: Pick only one console per generation.

The entire concept of generations is flawed. The Atari XE and the PC Engine were released in the same year, but Atari's console is using technology from an entire decade previous, and nobody will compare it to the Genesis and SNES. If we're going to play games with all of this - Generation 0: The Br...

Re: 2017/12/14: Playstation 4: Retro City Rampage DX, Tekken 7

You nailed it on Retro City Rampage. It may be the only 8-bit themed game where the presentation and intentional humor blow away the actual gameplay. As for Tekken... Why is it an issue whenever a game features a cast as diverse as the neighborhood I live in? It's utterly mad to think a worldwide ma...
