Re: RCA Studio II (1977) - console and games review - 40th Birthday Bonanza

I see that he lists it as a 1975 release, but it's not considered the first console with programmable carts.. any idea the reason for that? Maybe is it like the Odyssey where the carts were just jumpers rather than being programmable? Its actually different from either Odyssey or later microprocess...

Re: Does Nintendo hate money?

Y'all do realize Disney's been doing the same thing since Betamax came out? Limiting production to just under demand, so their products sell out fast and are never discounted. Not an evil strategy; Disney is better at communicating the limited nature of their releases tho.

Re: C64 - Happy 35th Birthday to the Commodore 64

If we go too far with this we'll wind up discussing politics/religion, since both have to do with ethics, morality, and implementing them in society. ;) I do believe there should be abandonment standards in intellectual property laws; there are already abandonment standards for real and personal pro...

Re: C64 - Happy 35th Birthday to the Commodore 64

I am not a lawyer either, but the point is that tbe law is mutable, country to country, over time. Many people feel society has a right to preserve things like games - but does that mean only at a museum, or decentralized in playable form to anyone? Do you have a right to play old Apple II games on...

Re: C64 - Happy 35th Birthday to the Commodore 64

Was it morally wrong to copy games? To answer a question with a question, was it morally wrong for Magnavox or Atari to make half hearted quickly produced low quality games to sell at $40 or more to kids? Wrong, or just buyer beware business as usual? Tramiel said business is war, so each side did ...

Re: Does Nintendo hate money?

I've already answered this in other threads; mind if I copy/past it here too? Initially producing a small number of units makes since to me. What would've happened if Nintendo decided to produce millions of Virtual Boys in anticipation of high demand? Overestimating ET's demand hurt Atari so badly t...

The "purse" is a fishbowl. If you look closely you can see the fish. On the left side, in the middle. See it?

Re: C64 - Happy 35th Birthday to the Commodore 64

From what I've read, doing business with Jack Tramiel was a lesson in capitalism, to be sure. In a twist I actually have a lot of respect for Jack Tramiel. He successfully built a popular computer company from a typewriter repair business, and he successfully rebuilt Atari after the crash. I think ...

Re: C64 - Happy 35th Birthday to the Commodore 64

Moving into big box stores helped the C64 gain market share, but it hurt Commodore's rep with their dealers. I read a write-up of what it was like to be a Commodore dealer; the dealers would get in PETs w/smashed screens, and Commodore wouldn't take them back. They'd order C64, only to see the compu...

Eclipse

The eclipse just passed by. Didn't get full coverage here, but it was still kinda neat. News said it would look like dusk. Didn't really get that dark. It was more like a day-for-night shot in an older movie.
