Re: Why did the NES do so well in the US

We were rabid for games and Nintendo Power increased the frenzy. This is why I like these forums too. You grew up on the NES, someone else on the Playstation, someone else on the 2600, etc. Its nice to hear about the systems that really created a passion for people. Sut obviously loves his Speccy, ...

Re: Review Spotlight

I think I changed it from Review Spotlight to Review Flashback a few months back. Thanks for returning it to "Review Spotlight", as Flashback now makes me think of the AT Games units or something else from the 1960s of which we do not speak. This feature is still pretty lost on the mobile...

Lessons of 8th Generation console launches

We are well into the 8th generation now as the current generation. Since we now have at least one company talking about a 9th generation console (The Nintendo NX), it seems we've come far enough to talk about 8th generation launch. Now its the middle game for this generation. Nintendo announced the ...

Re: The Criticize Nintendo Thread

How about the WiiU controller situation? I am never going to be a fan of the bundles with just one WiiU gamepad, but now that Smash Bros is out, we have people using the WiiU Gamepad, older Wii motes and nunchuck to have any other members of the family play the family system, the WiiU pro controller...

Re: Why did the NES do so well in the US

The nationwide release was September 1986. In early '86 it was in only big cities. So, I think the 1 million sales figure (for '86)actually is impressive ... I think you're underestimating the launch titles. They had basically every sport available and Excite Bike. And people liked Duck Hunt, espec...

Re: Why did the NES do so well in the US

For sure, 1987 and 1988 were powerhouse years. But that was built on the base of 1985 in arcades and 1986. That was a strong foundation. Games back then had a much longer life. Super Mario 1 and Zelda 1 were still popular two and three years after they came out, even as they sat on the shelf next t...

Re: Why did the NES do so well in the US

Another development that the NES brought to the table, which I thought was a game changer and what also impressed me the most when I first played NES, was the fact games were now beatable. Good observation my friend. My counter would be that the trend away from quarter muncher high score arcade sty...

Re: Why did the NES do so well in the US

Marketing and innovative gameplay. What marketing in particular? The 2nd generation consoles like Atari and Mattel did a lot of print advertising, as seen in the US comics of the early 80s. The NES though...not so much, and when I recall them, they were from 3rd parties like Konami in this ad: http...

Re: Why did the NES do so well in the US

I appreciate your first hand experience with the launch titles, and the thinking is good that compared to earlier consoles those games can be fun. However, the sales numbers are still looking like it was 1987 that did it, not the 1986 titles. By the end of 1986, the NES was basically another Colecov...

Re: Why did the NES do so well in the US

But it wasn't just Super Mario Bros. Again, by the time it got a proper release, you also had Zelda. And literally a couple months later is when a ton of good games came out. Your thinking is good Jon, as Legend of Zelda is an standout game...but it was not released in the US until summer of 1987. ...
