Re: Digital Lifespan

There is no historical "dark ages", not even in Europe. The period you mention, the Early Middle Ages, was the height of the Carolingian and Byzantine empires, which produced masses of art. Celtic and Anglo-Saxon culture flourished; this period is when we get the Book of Kells and Beowulf...

Re: Xbox One X launch

Against my better judgement and sensibilities, I did pick up an Xbox One X on the 7th. Definitely has a solid and compact design - quite a good deal smaller than my PS4 Pro. So far so good but I only play tested one game, Assassin's Creed Origins. A few frame rate hiccups here and there but no majo...

Xbox One X launch

We all know consoles often have launch issues. Hasn't been that long since we were talking Switch launch issues, which don't seem to be talked about anymore. The new Xbox One X just launched, and there are discussions of the box shutting down during play. It's all so new, so we'll see if it is a rea...

Re: Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Game Boy)

I believe I played this one far too late. I only attempted this little adventure many many years after it was released. I spent perhaps 30mins on it before turning it off. With many Zelda titles perseverance is key, even the best the series can offer are subject to slow starts. This is one of a cou...

Re: 747's Being Retired

This is probably dumb, but these news stories mad me think of this little kids book: http://www.artietheairplane.com/paint.htm Kids love cars planes and trains, so like Thomas the Tank Engine, make them characters. The problem is that, unlike making animals characters like Peter Rabbit, there are f...

Re: 747's Being Retired

Unfortunately, the 'jumbo jet' is also a contributor to how awful modern American airtravel is. The ability to pack 500+ people on an airplane led to the loss of having air travel being comfortable (although more affordable). Of course, there are airlines using large capacity planes that do focus on...

Consoles Sales are doing great

Video game consoles are selling great We have seen the arcades fall away, and given all the alternative ways to game such as PC and mobile devices, and shifting gaming interests like Facebook games, consoles were thought to be a fading away idea. Not so fast. All three major console makers are doing...

Re: Digital Lifespan

The decoder ring is a fun analogy. In our own hobby, we can see how this has been handled in the fast changing tech of video gaming. I can still play old tapes and floppies onnmy Commodore 64, but the hardware is cumbersome and many would not have it. So, the tapes have been converted in .tap or eve...

Re: Digital Lifespan

One solution is that the associated hardware is preserved, or there is a base format everything can, with some loss, be converted to - like ASCII Also, analog has lifespans too. Overhead projector slides, film, slides, cheap paperbacks, etc all deteriorate over a decade or so. Some stuff, old books ...
