Re: 2016/12/13: Philips CD-i: Christmas Crisis

The thing I always say about the CD-i is that it's basically like playing CD-ROM games in the early 1990s on a Mac Performa. (It even has many of the same titles: Myst, Kingdom I & II, etc.) If that evokes fond memories, it's a good shot you'll like the CD-i. If you're expecting the equivalent o...

Re: Favorite "Guilty Pleasure" Video Game

ET is bad in the respect it was a commercial failure and disappointed kids of tbe day who expected a very different game. I must say, this has always mystified me because I was a kid at the time and enjoyed E.T. quite a bit! I had zero problem making sense of it. But then, I've always been more int...

Re: Favorite "Guilty Pleasure" Video Game

To be clear, I think anyone has the right to dislike any game they want, and there are always going to be unpopular games (regardless of their quality) whose appeal is very narrow or limited to a small audience. That's beyond argument on both counts. My comments about "social signaling", t...

Re: Favorite "Guilty Pleasure" Video Game

I can almost see where you're coming from with a lot of those, but... Sword of Sodan ? I genuinely want to know what appeals to you in that game. I've written extensively about it elsewhere so I don't want to go on at great length here, but basically I think it's a lot more playable than people giv...

Re: Favorite "Guilty Pleasure" Video Game

Intellectually I know that 32X Motocross Championship isn't a good game (though it's not as bad as people say) and wouldn't pass muster with fans of the sport or as an advertisement for the 32X's "power". But I enjoyed it enough to win every race on all difficulties. Same with Wacky Races ...

Re: Bad Games You Have to Play

A few that come to mind: Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (3DO) - This isn't even really a game -- more of a visual novel. But horrible though it may be in objective terms, it's an absolute treat to play (especially with someone else), at least if you enjoy experiences like watching a hilariously awful Z-gr...

Re: 2016/11/14: Atari 2600: Marauder, Alpha Beam with Ernie

I tried playing Marauder a bit after reading your review, and what you wrote seems spot-on. Interesting twist on the Berzerk formula, but it got old fast. BTW, from the review: You know I've nearly exhausted the Atari 2600 catalog when I'm reviewing games like Alpha Beam with Ernie. When you wrote t...

Re: 2016/11/11: Genesis: Jewel Master, Zero Tolerance

Jewel Master is great! Along with El Viento and a couple of others, it's one of the few action-platformers on the Genesis that have completely engaged me and made me actively want to keep playing until I beat it (as opposed to just wanting to get the game done). And the music in Jewel Master is dyna...

Re: Confess Your Unpopular Video Game Opinions

1. The Sonic series holds little to no interest for me. Even the 1990s games aren't my cup of tea, and the 3D games are often suffused with creepy and/or furry fandom overtones. 1a. The 8-bit Sonic games are arguably better than the 16-bit ones. 2. Often, I'd rather play a "bad" game than ...

Re: 2016/10/19: Intellivision: Dracula, Tutankham

I think the new grade is a fair one. Dracula seems really nifty at first, but the novelty quickly wears off and you're left with a game whose gameplay isn't really up to the standard of the better games of the era. It's playable, but not addictive, and the experience doesn't build in intensity in th...
