Re: Return of the Typo Thread!

Spotted a couple of typos in the Davis Cup Tennis review for Turbografx-16: As much as I enjoy the whimsical antics of World Court Tennis ( NES , 1989) That should be "( NEC , 1989)". That caught my attention because World Court Tennis actually is based on a NES game, or rather a Famicom g...

Re: Is E.T. on Atari 2600 really that bad?

I enjoyed E.T. plenty when it was released. As someone who has no real interest in chasing high scores -- and who lusted after the sophisticated 8-bit computer games of the 1980s that my family couldn't afford to buy -- having a game that was more like a flipscreen adventure was welcome. Even at a v...

Re: 2016/10/6: Atari 5200: Frisky Tom, Looney Tunes Hotel, Meebzork

Nice reviews of three not-so-hot prototype games! Of the bunch, Frisky Tom seems like the only one worth bothering with. Very pleased to see more Atari 5200 reviews too -- the first ones since the batch we got last year. You're so close to finishing off the official release set, with only five games...

Re: 2016/9/29: Genesis: Shadow Blasters, Risky Woods, James Bond: The Duel

Shadow Blasters is just too easy, IMHO. Switching between the four characters makes it trivial to beat the game, and I had no trouble putting together a 1LC (completion with no lives lost). I think Risky Woods is more playable than it seems at first -- a couple finesses, the details of which I don't...

Re: Berzerk 2600

Berzerk on the Atari 2600 is a great port that suffers from one fatal flaw: if you stand still, a timer slowly counts down, and when it reaches a certain point the game automatically resets on you. The idea was to kick in a screensaver routine if the game goes idle -- but in a nasty mistake, the tim...

Re: 2016/9/20: Fairchild Channel F: Bowling, Pro Football, Video Whizball

Has anyone read Kevin Savetz's 2012 book, Terrible Nerd? The Fairchild Channel F was his first video game console , so he waxes on about it in a charming way. When you lose in Tic Tac Toe, it tosses a mild 1970s insult at you (you lose turkey), which Dave did not comment on. Interesting -- the Odys...

Re: 2016/9/20: Fairchild Channel F: Bowling, Pro Football, Video Whizball

Awesome! I love seeing new Channel F reviews -- I really want to get one someday. There's something special about that innocent 1970s approach to game design. You're actually getting close to reviewing the full set, especially if you skip the educational games (which you tend to do). Other than thos...

Re: 2016/9/16: Turbografx-16: Monster Lair (CD), Genji Tsushin Agedama (Japan), Order of the Griffon

I agree that games for all the different hardware configurations should be kept together. The litmus test I generally use is whether the hardware add-on adds a CPU or not; if it doesn't, it's not a new system. Some games, e.g. Bonk 3 and Altered Beast (any others?), are even available in both CD and...

Re: Return of the Typo Thread!

Correct me if I'm wrong -- I'm a newcomer to the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 -- but the review labeled as "Nightmare Creatures" for the TurboGrafx-16 should really be Night Creatures, no?

Re: Most Worthless Console You have Ever Owned?

Funny, the 3DO is the fifth-gen console I play the second-most, after PlayStation. A lot of those 3DO > PS1 and Saturn ports were botched to varying degrees: Psychic Detective has big cuts, Star Fighter has graphical downgrades, etc. I don't do PC gaming so I wouldn't know much about those, but I've...
