Re: Video Game Narrative

Gentlegamer wrote:The only great story a video game can tell is that created by the player and his in-game actions. The agency of the player is the storyteller.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you saying that cutscenes and other in-game narrative can't be good?

Re: Video Game Narrative

Great topic! The idea that somehow videogame stories can't compete with the best films and novels is an unnecessary abstraction that acts as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course, there are always ambitious and talented individuals who are able to disrupt the status quo. As for your last point, I h...

Video Game Narrative

I saw this topic come up in the Gamergate thread, but it was cut off for being off topic, so I'd like to bring it up again here. So... do you think it's possible for a video game to tell a great story? Not just good as in "entertaining," but something amazing that does more than give you a...

Re: Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3 and 360

I get that the mishmash of multiple "fantasy" elements is part of the draw. The games have always had that weird mis-mash and it was a GOOD thing. It had robotics, mechs, guns, daggers, swords, spells, lions, tiger and bears...oh my! Final Fantasy has never been Tolkien-esque. It's like D&...

Re: Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3 and 360

Awesome review. Final Fantasy XIII might be one of the most hotly debated games of the previous generation. I'm a big Final Fantasy fan, so I picked it up and after about 17 hours of playing decided it wasn't for me. I tried. I really tried to like the game. I just didn't like it. The characters we...

Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3 and 360

Review of Final Fantasy XIII by DaHeckIzDat Final Fantasy is, without a doubt, the biggest JRPG franchise we have today. While others, like Shin Megami Tensei: Persona or the Tales Of series, might be big in their own right with their own dedicated fanbases, they simply cannot hold a candle to the p...
