I remember when I was a kid seeing a tabletop vectrex like racing game. It was a one game only device like the game & watch games. It had a black background and looked like you was racing at night. It had a joystick and was in a smallish cabinet.
Does anyone have an idea what it's called?

Could it be Vectorbeam's Speed Freak, circa 1979?
(not to be confused with a 1979 disco song)
A nice game as a kid since you had a clock, so you got a nice play even if you were not playing well. You might remember a Battlezone like cracked windshield from this game too.
This would not fit in with your cabinet description though. This had a driving wheel, a foot pedal and a gear shift lever. Maybe you are remembering a gear shift up down lever as a joystick? Also, since it has a foot pedal, it would have to be a full sized cabinet or a cockpit model.

Speed Freak looked amazing for it's time. To bad the Vectrex couldn't make something similar.
TBH though while it looks amazing I don't think it played worth a damn.
