Pause and the Atari 2600

Postby scotland » September 6th, 2016, 5:50 pm

I was preparing to play an Atari 2600 game, and the manual surprised me by explaining that the b/w button can be used to pause the game. That's cool. I know you can do a pause kit mod to put in a pause toggle, but just with stock hardware, what games can you pause on the Atari 2600. Seems like there are 4 types, in order:

Type 1 Freezes Time - What we think of as pause. The screen may go all gobbly gook, but the action is halted.
Type 2 Safe Place - You can stay in a bunker forever.
Type 3 Turn Based - Where the game will wait forever for you to take your turn, without any timing penalty
Type 4 End of Life / Level - There is a reason, like your ship exploded, before the action starts up again.

Is that about right? Can you think of games for each category?
