SNES/Sega Genesis games with TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine CD/Sega CD style intros/cutsscenes?

Postby Sonicx9 » March 6th, 2017, 11:00 pm

I always wonder what SNES/Sega Genesis games had TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine CD/Sega CD style intros/cutscenes? I ask because even though the SNES/Sega Genesis carts do not hold as much data as CD-Rom games. I have discovered their has been occasional SNES/Sega Genesis games with cutsceens similar to the TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine CD games, and even the Sega CD when they do not use FMVS.

One of the best examples of this is the SNES game based on Eek! The Cat, yes the game itself is not very good to begin with. But the best part of the game is the animated intro that no only does a decent job recreating the intro of the TV show of the same name. But uses both Mode 7/limited animation and voices that rival the TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine CD/Sega CD style intros/cutscenes. Have a watch and see below!

Any other notable SNES/Sega Genesis that have TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine CD/Sega CD style intros/cutscenes? Any recomendations would be welcomed!

Another World and Flashback have fully animated cutscenes all the way through. They're Amiga ports, and that kind of thing was huge on the Amiga, going back to Cinemaware's games of the mid- and late '80s.

Here is one that I forgot, it is Do-Re-Mi Fantasy Milon's Quest aka Milon's Secret Castle 2: https://youtu.be/dao8A7TlrpM?t=38s

This one is not too surprising considering it was made by Hudson Soft, who was best known for making the TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine-CD hardware/many of their TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine CD games have cutsscenes like this, so it must have been done as a tribute to those games,

Did blackthorn have discerned? I know it had a lot of animations but can't remember if I saw cutscenes.

Yeah, like Stalvern said, the one that immediately pops in my head is Out of this World (aka Another World) for SNES. I didn't play that game for the first time until the mid-2000s or later.... and yet, I was still so amazed when I saw the car pull up in the opening cutscene. I was like "no way is the SNES doing this right now..never knew this was possible." In fact, graphically, it's probably the most impressive thing I've witnessed firsthand in an SNES game. (I'm sure there's better, but it's def my personal favorite, because until then I never realized it was possible on a cartridge game.)

Here's a Youtube video of the SNES intro. The part that amazed me starts at about 1:30.
