Open World History

With all this recent talk of Breath of the Wild, I thought this history lesson on open world games seemed especially relevant. Enjoy!

I'm disappointed to see no mention of Starflight in that article. That game was one of the first open-world games I ever played in the 80s. It was like "ok you've hired your crew, here's your ship, go out into the galaxy and explore" and you could pretty much do whatever you wanted. In a sense it made us young Trekkie nerds feel like we were Captain Kirk exploring the vast unknowns of the galaxy. That game doesn't get enough credit for its influence on the genre.
