What is your Holy Grail?

Postby JWK » October 18th, 2017, 2:36 pm

Now that North American PS1 RPG collection is almost complete (still need Shadow Tower!), I’ve started focusing on the Sega Saturn. Specifically my favorite genre of game to play on the Saturn: shoot em ups. Now, anyone that knows about Saturn shooters knows there are dozens of *very* expensive Japanese imports on the system. But of all the games I want, the rarest and most out of reach price-wise is HyperDuel, currently priced at $500+ on eBay.

So, HyperDuel for me is the expensive game that I want the most. What is your “holy grail” of game collecting? It could be a rare game, an expensive game or just one that you really want to play.

A Raiden II arcade cabinet. I can dream...

Have you ever played Raiden Dx? It’s like a remix of Raiden II. I just bought it not too long ago for JP PS1. Sure, it isn’t exactly like having an arcade unit, but tipping a TV on is side to TATE mode and using an arcade stick... not a bad compromise!

It’s a great game, btw.

Probably Atari's Quadrun. I actually found this site by following the link on AtariAge's Quadrun page, about 15 years ago.

Raiden Project on PS1 has a kick ass port is Raiden 2 on it.

For holy grail mine would be one of the rare gems in the Saturn. Anything else can just be emulated. I'll go with Panzer Dragoon Saga. But even those can be bought as a reproduction on the cheap.

For holy grail I own would be Steel Battalion controller CIB for Xbox. That's an experience that can't be emulated either.

I concur, Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn. Damn even crappy Saturn games aren't cheap.

I thought that this thread was about "Holy Grail" games. The arcade Raiden II is that; reasonably priced and widely available home versions aren't.

Others for me: the excellent, undeservedly obscure Game Boy shoot-em-ups ZAS and StarHawk, neither of which I've seen for much less than $200.

I might also like a Casio PV-1000. I know it's library consists of a few arcade ports which were done better on other systems, but still, that thing's gorgeous.

The Epoch Super Cassette Vision is also interesting, with a better-looking selection of games.

Slightly more sane, but still out there: An Astrocade. Probably still too expensive/impractical.

Shoot, I'm so cheap I'd consider a $30 copy of Spyro the Dragon an "Holy Grail."

My holy grail? For me, it'd be a complete copy of either Panzer Dragoon Saga or Magic Knight Rayearth. Both are so expensive now though, but I can dream I guess. I'll never stop looking until I find them someday.

The Pioneer Laseractive with the Mega LD attachment.
Feel it’s a piece of Sega history I’m missing (despite the fact they only actually produced one game of their own on it).
