How wide is the Atari 5200?

Postby Superjay » December 31st, 2007, 1:02 am

I want to know because this year I want to do my dream setup with all the systems I like and the enertainment system I want to get has about 18 inches of room. I don't have one so I want to plan ahead. I heard this was the biggest console.

...while we're on the subject (kind of), which controller IS bigger, the original Neo Geo controller or the 5200 trackball controller? Me and a friend are arguing here

I believe the Neo Geo is the larger of the two.  It measures in at a whopping 11" wide by 8" deep by 1.35" high (plus the control knob height)... I do not have the 5200 trackball controller, though from what I have read/seen, the unit is taller though the Neo Geo dwarfs it in overall size.

C'mon guys - don't post an answer to a question unless you really know the answer.  Anybody can guess or speculate but that's not useful.

The 5200 trackball is substantially larger than a Neo Geo controller.  The trackball is a beast that is larger than most consoles.

Hello VGC.

The "C'mon guys..." is directed towards me since I basically answered the questions(s).  My bad.  I did give the exact measurements of the Neo Geo controller, as well as stated that I did not have the 5200 trackball unit in my original answer.  I should have more clearly stated the facts (which I gave) versus my speculation (compared to the 5200 trackball).  I will provide only definitive responses which I can support and leave out my opinions (or ensure they are clearly defined as such).

However, though it was my bad, I am not sure that it necessitated the "C'mon guys..." response.  An email to me or a simple correction post to this thread would have sufficed.  As my previous posts in the VGC forums have displayed, it is not like I have a total of three video game consoles and am shooting information from the hip with no experience/consoles to back it up.

Thanks VGC and hope everyone is enjoying a safe and happy new year.

Terry

The VGC is correct.  Though the following link does does give dimensions, it does seem to show that the 5200 trackball controller is a huge piece of hardware.

Hope this helps out.

I didn't mean to be rude, but you'd be surprised how many messages I have to delete posted by people who respond to questions with guesses or assumptions.

The worst case is when somebody gives feedback about my review, stating something like "I'm sure there's an option to adjust that".  So I go back and waste my time going through all of the menu options, only to discover that the guy didn't know what the hell he was talking about.

I say, if someone posts a question and you don't know the answer, just don't reply.

I guess that's just a sore spot for me.  You guys are fine though.
