Favorite version of Doom?

Postby VideoGameCritic » December 28th, 2011, 8:16 pm

I'm systematically posting new Doom reviews, but it seems like everyone has a strong opinion about which version is the best.  Which is your personal favorite??

Don't really know if the PC version can be beat in the end. But, personally, my fondest memories of the game come from version released on the Playstation 1 primarily because it was the first version I played as a kid.

You asked for favorite, not best, so...

GBA. Imagine the Jaguar version, but with a smoother speed, better controls, and an actual soundtrack. Now imagine you can take it anywhere!

Sound good? It should. It's the game that got me addicted to the series.

Now imagine the low resolution graphics that handicap your pixel hunt - the game runs at half the resolution of regular GBA games. ( It wasn't a problem for the sequel, so it's not the hardware.) If you've ever designed an Atari 2600 game in your head, you won't have any trouble decoding which squares represent a distant enemy animation and which are a power-up, but anyone born after 1983 should be afraid...

Well console vs console, the Jaguar version is untrumpable.

However overall the PC wins this one

The Xbox and Xbox 360 have better versions of Doom than the Jaguar.

Except by the Playstation.

The best console port is the Playstation version without a doubt. John Romero (Creator of Doom) called it the "Best DOOM Yet" when it came out. It has a full CD quality soundtrack instead of just MIDI like the PC version. It has dynamic lighting effects, and even a few exclusive levels. Plus it has both Ultimate Doom and Doom II on one disc.

Ps1 is by far the best port, there is no comparison, no need for debate. I guess the PC version would be the best resolution-wise, but the music is cheesy as hell. Ps1 port had great ambient lighting and sounds.

What are the main differences between Doom and Final Boom on the PS1?

I've never played either version.

Final Doom is not a version of Doom, but a separate game. You could've considered it Doom 3, but then a game by that name came out, so yeah...

The PS1 "port" of Final Doom takes a number of the levels from Final Doom  and a number of levels from the "Master Levels for Doom II" expansion pack and assembles them in a full 30 level game.

You should give that release a go, Critic.
