Anyone have any expectations on what Nintendo is going to show next week at E3. I heard the NX isn't going to be displayed but I'm interested to see what else Nintendo has in store. Hopefully something really show stopping.

Nintendo ?
Zelda, Mario or a Mario related game that's all they've done since the N64 and I can't see E3 being any different. Some big third party announcement would be cool.

Maybe, just maybe, they will have something up their sleeves. They need to hit with the masses again as they are in danger of being 'niche' and being niche doesn't make big profit or provide a gaming platform with variety.

People say how great the Wii U games library is but Shooters ? Sports Titles ? Proper Racing Titles ? big selling genres just not represented.

Absolutely true. I've heard that NIntendo is trying to push 3rd party developers. Hopefully it isn't a case of too little too late and we can see something solid at E3.

Also, even if it is a lot of Nintendo titles I'm interested to see what is coming out.

Nintendo announced that the 1989 Famicom only game Mother, the predecessor to Earthbound (and Mother 3) is being released in English on the WiiU eshop. And its out today. Some gamers are blowing trumpets in celebration, others are wondering why bringing a 25 year 8 bit old game to the eshop is worth trumpets, and are breaking out the kazoos. You make the call.

The sad part is that the ROM has been floating around the internet for years. The game was actually complete but was never released. I wonder if they did a re-translation or if they took the same ROM from online and uploaded that?

In similar news- the free to play, fan-made Mother 4 is scheduled to be released sometime this summer. It looks like it could be really good. I hope that it's released soon, just in case Nintendo decides to pull a Square and send a cease and desist letter to the game makers. Once the games out it doesn't matter if Nintendo tries and pulls it, the file will be on the internet...

It's worth trumpets. The other way to look at this: major billion dollar tech company releases official English translation of insane Japanese game at hugely expensive press event.

I love the idea that some of the biggest announcements this year were such utter foolishness. Rare's Spectrum games are coming to a technologically advanced, North American console in 2015?! Sony is helping finish a trilogy originally for Dreamcast? Nintendo toys work with Activision toys to hit stuff in a videogame franchise originally started around Spyro the Dragon? Microsoft is making a game where you upgrade a cute robot dog? Nintendo is turning Metroid into a new BallBlazer? Sony is still seriously making a game where a little boy is friends with a giant dogbird?

Just look at the games at E3 from a lot of PS3, 360, Wii years. Then look at the stuff from this year. I will gladly trumpet all the silliness and announcements of old ROMs being made available if it means gaming continues on the current trajectory.

A funny thing on the amiibo front. This means amiibos work on skylander bases, so is this the beginning of Nintendo on other consoles? Can Johnny Xbox now play Mario with his swap force? Can Playstation Patty perchance play Princess Peach with her pufferthorn?

Sadly, no. I believe they are specific to the Nintendo versions. An interesting aside will be if they still do a Wii version of this Skylanders (like last year where it was still lead platform). If they do, will that version support those Amiibos, but only as Skylanders (as the Wii can't read Amiibos). Or will one Nintendo platform not support Nintendo's own product at all?

Another aside: I was at a school bookfair with my 6 year old yesterday. Skylanders books have a big section bigger than anything else, by a mile. This franchise really is huge. Think about the games you liked when you were 6-10 and how much they still mean to you. That's what Skylanders is going to be for a generation of people.

We often discuss digital vs physical sales here.

http://www.cnbc.com/2016/05/27/digital-video-game-sales-rise-5-to-62b-in-april-report.html

From what I gather, for consoles in April 2016, Digital Software: $576 million Physical Software: $203 million (according to CNBC and NPD. It also has nothing to do with used physical media sales). Is digital really twice as popular as physical in consoles?

By the way, console sales are less than half compared to either PC and mobile sales. PC digital sales were $2.9 billion in April, and mobile sales $2.6 billion. Of course, this is just one month, but I always thought consoles accounted for more than that.

That does really surprise me. Both the volume of digital vs physical and especially the PC vs console sales.
I thought PC game sales were way behind console sales, although perhaps factoring old game sales from Steam and GOG is making a difference ?

I was starting to think I may stop buying systems after the PS4 with the above and Shaupur's news of MS wanting an Apple type game Eco system it just might happen, I'd rather play Sega anyway.
