Joking right?

In all seriousness, if anything the Dreamcast represents quality over quantity. Its official life was short, but a higher than normal proportion of its games were good. A handful are timeless classics like Soul Calibur, Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, or Sonic Adventure(s).

The more I think about the Dreamcast, the less I think I could bring myself to sell my Wii U (I'd been considering it). A system like the Wii U, with a high proportion of good games that will age well, decent power for homebrew, and a small, but active loyalist community is already a great setup for a long afterlife. The large online userbase for Splatoon and MK8 will also, no doubt, put up their own servers (like they did on Wii and DS for MK and Animal Crossing), which will be interesting to use. However, add in the touchpad and the way that can be used to control menus, play off TV, interact with games, and move into AR, once the community gets ahold of it for 5 or 10 years, and if you don't have one, you'll regret it. I'm more interested in the Wii U now for what it will be in 2020 than for what it will be in 2017.

I feel the same. The Wii u had all the makings of a console that'll be expensive as heck down the road.. I really need to download some of the mario kart dlc while it is still available...

I feel the opposite. I really wanted to like the WiiU and went back and forth on it many times. In the end, I passed for many good reasons, and have no remorse on it. For instance, the unique gamepad controller is also a unique risk. Whether its from the slow deterioration of the battery holding a charge to just wear and tear on the analog switches and buttons. You may want to invest in a second battery or some replacement parts now.

This is one thing I have zero worries about. My local used game shop prides itself on having odd stuff and doing big orders from places like Hyperkin. As a result, I can tell you for sure, there are affordable parts available for pretty much every system ever, and I have bought or seen most of them and the build quality is often incredible (or garbage, depending on price point you want). I got a replacement 32X to Genesis cable there, and he has others left. You can get the fantastic A77, N85, and S91 controllers there, but you can also get third party replacement VMUs and Fishing controllers for the Dreamcast. It is 2016. Tech is cheap, 3D printers exist, the internet lets you order anything, and geeks are running the show. Nothing you ever need will not be available in this hobby ever again.

It is a nice world for this, isn't it? I stumbled over one of those 3rd party VMUs myself, and it struck me how great that was. Now will someone build me a nice new C64 for a $100, and I'll compose a haiku for you in gratitude.

Happy New Year to you Atarifever, and to all the forum, and my all our tech worries fade away like smoke from New Year's fireworks!

It strikes me the same way. All the stuff I used to worry about one day not being able to find has brand new replacements now, newer than my Gamecube from back when I first started to worry about this stuff. :)

For fun after posting this I went to the Hyperkin website to see what they had available for the Gamecube (Nintendo's previous poor seller) and they had new 3rd party (high quality) controllers in various colours, 3rd party memory cards in various sizes, and new third party GBA Link cables for the 3 or 4 games that ever used that. For the Wii U, they already have replacement 3rd party batteries for the Gamepad. They also had replacement stands, head mounts, and eye mounts for the Virtual Boy. It is truly a wonderful time to be a collector.

Atariboy wrote:I do worry just a bit about it being a digital exclusive though. Sales will not be strong for this. Here's some numbers to give an idea on what this will likely move on the Wii U.

-Twilight Princess (GameCube): 1.32 million (On a system with an install base that was 9 million units larger and with the successor that was backwards compatible, which led some early adapters to go for the last-gen release for traditional controls.

-Wind Waker HD (Wii U): 1.98 million

-Twilight Princess HD (Wii U): < 1 million

Given these sort of numbers and the fact that it tended to be Nintendo's most loyal fans that bought a Wii U (And thus, likely to be early adapters for the Switch), I think this one will have its job cut out for it to make it to a million.

Given that we now know that BotW will be both physical and digital on WiiU, I think it has much more chances of outselling all the previous three installments of the series. The WiiU user base may be small but it's been one of the most active this generation when it comes to buying games, especially first party. Even "unusual" IPs sold incredibly well given the small audience - Splatoon sold 5 million copies, and recently Pokken Tournament sold nearly as much as Street Fighter V across all platforms. Plus, both WWHD and TPHD were remasters of games most people played already, therefore the "low" sales.

Twilight Princess was a much better deal to get on Wii, because for $300 you could get the console + Wii Sports + TP, and the console was backwards compatible, so many people could sell off their GameCube and upgrade to the new machine. With the Switch, you're going to need to fork out $360, which is a lot just to play ONE game. TP on GameCube was also released approx. one month after the Wii version, which probably contributed to most people not wanting to wait and go for the new system. Most WiiU owners who can't get a Switch because of bad distribution, will also be getting it for WiiU just to play it at launch I guess. I believe BotW on WiiU is going to sell very well considering the conditions. It's not going to outsell the Switch version obviously, but I wouldn't be surprised if it sold in the 2 million range...
