Axiom Verge Question

I want to order Axiom Verge, but can't decide whether to get the Switch or PS4 version.
Normally I'd go with the Switch, but the price is $50 vs $20.
Any idea why that is? Advice?

If I had to make a wild guess (and that's all this is, so don't take my word for it) since the Switch has so few games on it Nintendo feels like they have to charge more per game than Sony does.

It isn't a $50 game on Switch, so I suggest going elsewhere for it if they're inflating the price.

There are two editions. Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition is basically the collector's edition and includes a poster, DVD documenting the production of the game, and an art booklet. Then the Switch and the PS4 also got a game only edition, just called Axiom Verge.

Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition is a $30 game on the PS4 (Although Amazon has it for $20). On Switch, it's a $40 game due to the "Switch tax" because of the more expensive media. Publisher Badland Games though got a lot of complaints about the higher price on the Switch, so has tossed in an additional extra in the form of a soundtrack cd, exclusive to the Switch version.

The game-only edition is $20 (PS4) and $30 (Switch). I don't think the game-only Switch version retains the soundtrack cd though, despite still being $10 more than the equivalent PS4 version.

Physical Switch games are consistently more expensive than physical versions of games on other systems. It has been dubbed the Switch tax. Reportedly this is because the cartridges are more expensive than the discs used for PS4 and Xbox. Although Nintendo has said the price is up to the publisher and it is also reported that the 8GB cartridge is the same cost to the developer as a disc. So who knows what is happening. It may be developers taking advantage of the combined popularity of the Switch and lower quantity of competing games on the system.

That said, the game should be retailing for $40. I’m guessing you checked Amazon because I just did and it’s a third party seller taking advantage of Amazon being out of stock and marking it up. It is $40 at reputable retailers.

If you have a GameFly subscription you can keep a used copy of the Switch game for $27 (I know because I just rented it). When you get a used game from GameFly they ship you the case and manual, which has never been used since they only ship the game itself for the rental, so it’s the best condition used game you can buy. If you don’t have a GameFly subscription and haven’t had one you could get a free trial.

It's strange - the Switch "Multiverse" version is $40 (with extras) but the plain normal version is $50. WTF?

The plain game-only version is $30. You're either looking at a Canadian retailer like Amazon Canada, shopping at places that aren't mainstream retailers, or you're looking at 3rd party listings. MSRP is $29.99 and everywhere listed in the US as stocking it on the publisher's website is respecting the price.

It's sadly out of stock online at Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy right now. But GameStop has it in stock right now for $29.99.
