Good and bad. I just don't have time for RPGs anymore! It's so tough to get to. This has been my main game for like a year now and I'm only 25 hours in! And then I looked at the Table of Contents on a Gamefaqs walkthrough and realized that my current place in the game is only like 30% through!!

100% my situation. I love JRPGs. The colours, art style, music, cliche stories, magic systems, etc. I recently bought some on the Wii VC, I have a bunch from the Wii U VC, and have about 4 or 5 picked up on the PSTV (including FF8). For all that I have been able to get, maybe, 2 hours into any of them. And I still have not finished Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii, or made any kind of decent start on "The Last Story." I WANT to play this type of game, but the time and energy commitment is too much for me any more. I just cannot play a long, story-based game anymore. Something always comes up to make me skip 4 or 5 nights in a row and then I always forget what I was doing.

I suppose Skylanders is a kind of RPG, and my son is making me spend hours and hours playing that, so that's something I suppose. :)

To bring this back to the topic at hand, this is precisely why I cannot play most stealth games, and especially Metal Gear. Too long and too complex for me to ever have a chance to finish now. I may have been able to get into them if I'd discovered them when I was younger, but now they are impossible for me to ever play.

Twin Snakes (GC remake) MGS 3, Peace Walker, and MGS V are on my list. I was playing part 2 two and then turned on PW just to see what it was all about. I really couldnt get in to it because of the controls. Like you, I felt like I was wrestling with the controls the entire time, so I shut it off. When I have some spare time, I will get back in to these games. They take a lot of dedicated time though, so I dont know when that will be :/

Warming slightly more to this, I'm enjoying the 'endgame' unlocks and levelling up of teams in a JRPG grind fest type of way.

Still don't think it's a good Metal Gear game but there is fun to be had.

I know I'm changing like the weather with this one.

I would now upgrade it to a B-. You need to embrace the Motherbase micro management and be prepared to do some grinding for the best staff to power your weapons up enough. Bosses that gave me grief 10 game hours ago I can now blow away thanks to ranking up my teams.

So don't approach Peace Walker expecting a typical Metal Gear Solid game and be prepared to grind and manage your teams and it gets surprisingly addictive.

Sounds like an improved version of Portable Ops, since that game also centers on short individual missions and building a team of soldiers to complete each mission. I recall PO having a pretty good story though, which kept me pushing through the game, so it might be worth trying PO after you finish PW.

On my end, I'm playing MGS: Twin Snakes for Gamecube at the moment. Just started it, so I'm not far enough in to have an opinion yet. Have you tried this one?

Also, just (finally) bought a PS4 this week, and I have MGS 5 for it. Still, I feel like I should really play Ground Zeroes first. And Peace Walker too, for that matter. What do you think?

Also, for MGS 5, it's over a year old, so am I missing anything as a result? Specifically, my understanding was that there is some sort of online/community aspect to MGS 5, and I'm wondering if that has died off now that the game isn't a new release.

Not played Twin Snakes but it is on my watch list but it is surprisingly expensive here in the PAL territories. Please let me know what you think as I've heard they mixed reports.

See I found Ground Zeroes more confusing for not playing Peace Walker than I found playing Phantom Pain.

So no I don't think you need to play Ground Zeroes before Phantom Pain as Phantom Pain recaps the main points of Ground Zeroes anyway. But I would play PeaceWalker before Ground Zeroes.

I never played Phantom Pain online so I would say no your not missing anything from that front. I can promise you it's a lot of fun and the Motherbase section is streamlined for the better in MGSV. For example, if your keep sniping enemies with headshots they will start wearing helmets to protect themselves. But to counteract that you can send your team out to attack their helmet stockpiles. Little touches like that affect the gameplay. Truly best game I've played this generation.

Twin Snakes is pretty pricey here too. I paid over $40 for my copy. How much does it sell for there? Back when this game came out, I figured it was an enhanced port of MGS 2 to the Gamecube, so I didn't pay it any attention. Only more recently did I find out that it was a remake of MGS 1, which sounded a lot more interesting to me.

Also, I'm definitely looking forward to Phantom Pain then. You mentioned all of the "play this before that" scenarios except one... should I play Peace Walker before Phantom Pain? Or is it not worth delaying Phantom Pain to play PW first?

Twin Snakes is in the £40 - £50 region here so a bit pricey for a sixth generation title. One of the criticisms I heard is they made Snake overact a little making a little more comic book hero rather than a gruff soldier. However the thought of MGS1 with MGS2 controls and first person aiming sounds awesome.

I would definitely jump straight into Phantom Pain then go back and play the other two to fill the gaps in. But you will get the story fine, you'll just be unaware of a few characters. Also the Phantom Pain is a lot less cutscene heavy compared to previous instalments. There is a lot of audio tapes which fill the story in, best way is to listen to these using the in game iPod type device.

I've been playing MGS V: Ground Zeroes to death the past couple weeks and it made me think back to this old thread. Considering that MGS is among my favorite gaming franchises, I decided that I've gone long enough without playing MGS V: Phantom Pain. I've been wrestling for awhile about whether to play Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes first, since those are the only other canon MGS games that I haven't played. I decided that I'm going to skip Peace Walker, at least for the foreseeable future. But I wanted to play Ground Zeroes first, especially since certain items and characters that you acquire can carry over to Phantom Pain.

Overall, I definitely recommend Ground Zeroes for MGS fans. It sort of feels like a demo, because all the missions are confined to one small military base. If you just want something quick, you can play the main mission once and finish it within 2-4 hours. For people wanting more substance, there's enough extra tasks to kill 10+ hours here. It's light on story, and I definitely felt out of the loop, because it uses characters from Peace Walker. However, there is a lot of background info to read and listen to, which catches you up to speed. That's part of why I've decided to skip Peace Walker for now. But I'm really happy with the gameplay mechanics for stealth and combat--they're the best of the MGS games that I've played so far--so I look forward to using them in Phantom Pain. I recommend this before Phantom Pain, or for people who played Phantom Pain and want something more to play.

I've spent a lot of time on Ground Zeroes, so I'm going to take a little break and play something else before jumping into Phantom Pain. Will probably start it in a month or two.

Happy you enjoyed Ground Zeroes. You will love Phantom Pain once it gets into the open world. Love to hear your thoughts it truly is the best game I’ve played this gen.
