Hearing that this game is going to be released in the US soon for the Switch and PS4 inspired me to revisit my Japanese (region-free) copy of this excellent puzzle game.

Not all of you have heard of Puyo Puyo, but I bet Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and/or Kirby's Avalanche ring a bell to some of you. Basically, they were localizations of a super-addictive competitive falling block game called Puyo Puyo that has been sadly overlooked outside of Japan for the most part. Googling "puyo puyo" will give you a good description of the simple but addictive mechanics. On a side note, the gameplay of Capcom's Puzzle Fighter takes heavy inspiration from Puyo Puyo, so fans of that game will likely appreciate it.

This particular game mashes up Puyo Puyo and the king of falling block games itself, Tetris. The results are surprisingly brilliant. There's a variety of ways to play it, but the multiplayer is where it shines. If you can get a friend to play this with you, it will get quite intense, especially while trying to rack up chains in Puyo Puyo mode.

I didn't think this game would ever make it out of Japan, but now that it's going to, I'd recommend holding out for the English version because navigating the untranslated menus is kind of a pain in the ass. Otherwise, though, it's a great take on both of its represented games and can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone regardless of how hardcore or casual of a gamer they are.
