This is quality Rambo-style side-scroller for the NES. I really like it a lot. Rich graphics and a lively soundtrack.
The key seems to be avoiding having enemies gang up on you.
Using the machine gun is a highlight.

Like Pinball Quest, I also picked this game up in the same pawn shop a few months back. Haven't tried it yet, but I bought it based on good reviews I was seeing around the internet (again, thanks to google on my phone), so it sounds like your impressions are on target. Hearing it from you, I'll definitely bump it up on my list of games to play.
