This 3D remakes retains zero of the charm and fun of its predecessors.  Never has bashing demons been less fun.

I was thinking about picking this one up ... no redeemable qualities, then?

It comes with the original, good games, as bonus material. Do you call that a redeeming feature?

I didn't know that, but yes, that would be a redeeming feature.  I just started playing those comments were just my first impressions.

I just picked this one up from amazon a few weeks ago and I have to agree with The Critic.  They really seemed to miss what made the original games fun.  After about 10 minutes of playing you will become desensitized to the crazy amounts of blood and swearing that it loses any impact it might have had.  I played for about two hours and it just wasn't a whole lot of fun.  The metal music is terrible, the combat gets stale and the finishing moves you perform lack variety.

At this point I'm reluctant to even play it again, however I feel compelled to unlock the original games.  Those seem to be the only redeeming quality of this poorly executed reboot.  It really bums me out to say that too since Splatterhouse 2/3 are a couple of my favorite Genesis beat em ups...

Here is how you unlock the classic games.

SplatterhouseFinish Phase 2: ''The Doll that Bled''
Splatterhouse 2Finish Phase 4: ''The Meat Factory''
Splatterhouse 3Finish Phase 8 ''Reflections in Blood''

Too bad you have to play the remake to unlock the classic games.

Funny you'd say that, Leo, since that's exactly what's kept me from buying this!  I have the TG-16 port, but I've never gotten the chance to play the original, arcade version of the first game (complete with white hockey mask!), nor have I played either genesis title.  I would be willing to pay $10 per game for the classics, but I don't want to have to play through the stupid new game to do it.  The new Splatterhouse is shock and gore... for the sole sake of shock and gore.  Style over substance.  I play plenty of violent games, but this is just gross.

Ugh....good thing I have Splatterhouse 1 and 3 already.  Hopefully the game gets better.  It really didn't make a good first impression.

That would be a redeemable feature, but if you have to play X number of hours of a bad game to play the good games, I would probably just go out and buy the good games.

I really wished game companies would have the originals available from the start instead of having to play through any of the actual *new* game to play the originals.

Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox was the same way, ugh, I just wanted to play the old NES games...  The same goes for PSP Castlevania.  I picked it up to play Symphony of Nights.  Just give me everything selectable from a list. I've already bought the game, let me play what I want to to play (even if it's a 20 year old game).
