I purchased these two 3DS games today at Target (both had a price cut and were $20 each ), and I'm enjoying both of them.

Asphalt 3D has gotten tons of bad reviews from critics (in fact the series has always gotten crap from reviewers), but I personally enjoy it. Sure the graphics suck, but the game is exciting and even with a choppy framerate, I can't let go of it! There are lots of shortcuts and opportunities to catch big air, the music is good and the controls are better than what people give it. Overall,  somewhere around a B+ or A- in my opinion. The dialogue is corny but that adds to the hilariousness.

Ridge Racer 3D is my favorite of the two, mainly because I have never played a Ridge Racer game before! I'm glad I purchased this, because it's clearly one of the system's best. The controls are great and the tracks look amazing, especially in 3D! Using the X button to accelerate and the A button to drift is surprisingly intuitive. The game is super fast and the music is also very good. I love the skylines, especially the one in the airport! Overall, fantastic game, around an A- or A.

Wow! I'm surprised you've never played a Ridge Racer game before. They seem to accompany every single console launch now.

I only own 3 Ridge Racer games: Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution on the PSX and Ridge Racer Accelerated on the iPhone. I really like the iPhone one. Does the 3DS version also have tilt controls?

From what I can see from online, the 3DS, iPhone and two PSP games are all very similar in that they contain tracks from previous entries in the series. Although the tracklist on the 3DS is more towards RR6/7 tracks, compared to the PSP/iPhone versions which are just tracks before RRV. They all feature that cool nitro feature, and apparantely very similar graphics.

I don't have a Playstation so I can't get the four Ridge Racer games there, I have an N64 but not Ridge Racer 64, I have a PS2, nada, etc. I've wanted to play the games, so getting it on the 3DS was my big chance.

And no, unfortunately, Ridge Racer 3D does not have tilt controls. I've tried, but it doesn't work.

And the 3DS version is the only one on a dedicated gaming console, which makes it a plus for retail fans. The nitro feature is outstanding, and the graphics are phenomenal.

I agree on the Nitrous feature. I makes the game really fun, drifting through the final turns, gaining the nitrous to use as you emerge onto the final straight and jamming down that button to boost into first place is such a great feeling.

Thats a shame for the tilt control. I really enjoy that in first person mode. I didn't think I would but I've found it a really great way to feel engaged in racing games.

(As for the comment about about the only retail handheld version - there are two PSP games, and one on the Vita - the Vita one seems a con since most content is DLC though).

I think they've re-released Ridge Racer to death but ist great that this kind of blue-skies pure arcade gaming fun style gameplay can still come out compared to the dull slogs that make up the well reviewed racing games like Forza/Gran Turismo.
