I remember Vexer bringing up Cannibal Holocaust when The Blair Witch Project was mentioned... I finally found a copy and I really wasn't impressed... I could see how the movie had historical significance for horror films but I had a hard time following what was going on. I'm going to stick that one on my shelf and maybe a second viewing in the future might change my opinion....

On a side note, The House of the Devil is an excellent horror film! I was really impressed with this one. It was recommended on several sites so I gave it a go and I wasn't disappointed. I really love the way the film was shot and how the suspense slowly built throughout the film, until the climax hit on the last 15 minutes.

I too want to see Cannibal Holocaust for it's historical significance, but I've heard that it contains real animals being killed on screen. Is that true? That might be a deal-breaker for me.

Just bought a copy of House of the Devil for $2 at a flea market a month ago but I haven't got around to it yet. Glad to hear that it's worth it.

Yeah the movie has quite a few animal killings. I didn't enjoy watching those since I knew they were real. I think there are some versions that don't have them.

Just saw The Blair Witch Project for the first time. Not scary, but tense. The scariest part was being lost in the woods and not being able to find your way out, as well as everyone's gradual decline into insanity. The film also shies away from depicting anything supernatural, leaving many events open to interpretation. The acting is inconsistent but that's to be expected given the film's low budget ($22,000). Very impressive for its time and an important work in the genre. B+

Not recommended... Don't waste your money.

Fantastic movie. Recommended. I loved it.

Man... I don't get that but to each their own....

On a side note I saw a few different horror movies lately. I watched The Devil's Backbone- a Spanish horror film about a little boy who mysteriously died and the gang of kids at an orphanage. It was really good and although it really wasn't scary in anyway it was an overall strong movie. I really was hoping the main antagonist would get what was coming to him, and [bleep]. Several of the Spanish horror films I''ve seen have really done something different with the horror genre, focusing on story and atmosphere over scares. Definitely worth seeing if you like something a little different.

I saw The Visit- M Knight Shyamalan's most recent film... It was alright. Nothing spectacular but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be either. The weirdest part of the movie was it was more of a corny horror comedy then a straight up horror film. I really don't think Mr. Shyamalan is that funny but it wasn't a terrible film either... The biggest twist is that their wasn't really a twist at all...

Re-watched The Collector and The Collection. Both films are a lot of fun if you like mass murder type horror films. They're definitely brainless films and I think they succeed a lot where the Saw films failed. Might be worth watching if you thought the first couple Saw films were good or you like torture type horror films.

Any Halloween fans out there? While I never dress up or anything, I do like to increase the # of horror films I watch during this time of the year. So far, I've watched 2 this month. I watched Spring (2014), awesome romance/horror movie and was unlike anything I've seen in that genre. This movie is definitely worth a watch if you are into something different. I also watched The Loved Ones, which was a lot more gruesome. I had a hard time finding a copy of this movie and eventually paid $7 and bought a copy off of eBay. I don't know if I liked it as much as other fan reviews of the movie, but it was definitely interesting. I was cheering for the main guy to kill the father and daughter the whole way through.

I have a few on order right now: Frozen (2010ish), Honeymoon, and Kill List. Hopefully one of them comes soon as I am definitely in the mood for another horror film.

Grave Encounters and 'As Above, So Below' are both great found-footage horror flicks.

Grave Encounters is one of those 'haunted insane asylum' type flicks and 'As Above, So Below' kind of feels like a horror version of National Treasure :-).

October is great because people that aren't normally into the horror genre will gladly partake. I will host one or two horror movie nights this month with a few friends. Lots of popcorn and beer...plus some piece of cinematic trash that we can all laugh at. Can't wait.

So far this October I've watched.

The Babadook - A really well made film. It certainly lived up to the hype. A true horror film about some really difficult stuff. I found it to be thrilling and really well done.

Lost Boys - Re-watched this 80s classic. The film is itself is VERY dated. If you can't get past all the cheeseball 80s stuff then you're going to hate it. The film still holds up and I think it might be one of my favorite in the vampire genre. It has lots of really great scenes and I love the younger brother and his friends that are trying to figure everything out. Also, you gotta love that theme song with the children's choir. It's been stuck in my head for days!

You betcha. I assume the Frozen you are talking about is not about Disney Princesses and a talking snowman. I appreciate any horror insights. I went on wikipedia to see all the differnt types of horror movies, as there are some I really like (nature run amok, zombies, the paranormal, sci fi horror), and some I have no interest in (torture porn, psychological torture). Much of the current vogue has too much torture in it for me, so I might be missing out on some interesting films because I am no longer paying attention.

What websites do you go to follow the trends in horror tv, movies or books?

For Halloween, I really like a bit of comedy in my horror. I must watch American Werewolf in London every other year. I also like the classics - The Birds, Alien, etc.

I use several references to get an idea of films I might like. I will use sites like http://www.best-horror-movies.com/ or top horror movie lists I find through google, reference them to rotten tomatoes, and then if it seems like a genre I like I will typical start looking for a copy through used movie stores and stuff. I agree that torture horror movies really aren't my favorite either. I really like psychological horror and traditional horror the best, although all sub-genres of horror I enjoy, with horror comedies being my least favorite. I'm usually pretty willing to try and test out horror movies even if I'm a bit iffy on them.

Frozen is about 3 people who get trapped on top of a ski lift and is about them trying to escape before they freeze to death. I'm excited to see it as horror movies that are based around more realistic premises tend to have a lot more of an impact on me. I do love a lot of the more classic horror films, such as The Birds, Aliens, Psycho, Nightmare on Elm Street, House of Wax, The Fly, and a lot of others. I usually try to stick to movies from the 60's+ but I do like a few of the earlier ones.
