I went and saw two different horror movies over the last couple weekends. Last week I saw The Witch and was heavily disappointed. I didn't know anything about the horror film beforehand but man... it was slow... I usually like slow burning horror films but I couldn't get into this one at all. I think I was turned off by the old English as I found it very hard to understand. About half of the film I had no clue what they were talking about. I usually don't like films that take place before a certain time period (usually 1800's) and this one didn't turn out differently for me. The movie also had very few scares until the last 10 minutes so most of the time I sat there listening to them cry about religion... I also didn't enjoy the ending as it reminded me too much of The Last Exorcism...

I watched 10 Cloverfield Lane today and I really enjoyed it. I love John Goodman (going all the way back to Roseanne) and he really made the movie for me. Like the previews, it is very hard to tell if he is a good or bad guy throughout 80% of the film. You really don't know what to expect, one minute he's bad, then good, etc. The movie also has several cheesy parts but overall i enjoyed the film way more than the original Cloverfield. Like the first film, I found this more science fiction than horror, however there are arguments that the movie at least borrows elements from the horror genre. Most of the horror of the film is based around the confinements of living in the bunker and also about what is actually going on outside of it. The ending wasn't as great as I was hoping it would be, but it was average at worst. I highly recommend this one if you haven't seen it. I thought this movie looked pretty silly and seemed to come out of nowhere this year. However, I think this is probably the best horror film I've seen this year (not too hard with all the bad releases).

Thanks for the thoughts of 10 Cloverfield Lane. I love Kaiju movies, and while Cloverfield had all that HUD stuff and many other flaws, I mildly enjoyed it for what it was -- a bonus feature B plot promoted to A plot episode of a Godzilla series about a bunch of stupid teenagers who had nothing to do with the main plot otherwise. Sort of like Tom Cruise's version of War of the Worlds - very flawed, but still enjoyable. America just doesn't make too many of these movies that aren't Syfy made for tv CGI fests, so its nice to see ones with a real budget and actors worth their salt.

10 Cloverfield lane previews hit me as far more horror - like Misery in a bunker. If its more scifi, I'm good with that.

Yeah, days later I'm still not sure what genre the movie fell more under. It definitely had several horror elements but eh... I guess it isn't worth too much thinking about. The movie was excellent so definitely worth a watch if you think you might be interested.

I have watched quite a few different horror movies so I thought I'd update the thread a bit.

Blair Witch- I recently saw this film, which I found pretty good, although the camera was even more shaky then the original and the movie didn't do a whole lot different. What I liked the best about this movie was that when the movie ended I was left with a similar eerie feeling like the original Blair Witch Project. This movie is fairly good if you like the original film but depending on your expectations walking in you could very likely hate this movie.

The Invitation - EXCELLENT horror movie. This is a slow burn horror film where some mutual friends get invited to a party by an old friend, only for it to turn out horribly wrong. Might be a bit too slow for some but I found it excellent and everything is high quality in this film. Highly recommended.

Viral- This indie horror film really surprised me. It is a zombie-like horror film, once again a slow burner. The acting is pretty solid and instead of zombies you come across a parasite that slowly takes over their hosts. I really enjoyed it although not for everyone.

These are probably the three most recent horror movies I watched but there have been quite a few standout titles this year.

My wife and I recently watched The Invitation and I completely agree with your assessment of the movie.

Also recently saw The Woods and thought it was done pretty well. Definitely a lot of suspense and buildup that leaves you questioning what's real and what's not as the movie progresses.

Lastly, although it's not that new I just saw M Nigh Shamalan's (yes, I'm sure I butchered the spelling of his name) movie, The Visit. You always know there's going to be a surprise at the end of his movies but I'll admit I did not predict this one. I really liked this movie. Not necessarily one I'd rewatch though.

Currently watching original Salem's Lot made for tv movie

It's not a movie but I picked up Ash Vs. Evil Dead (Season One) on Blu Ray.
I love it! I'm really impressed with just how faithful it is to the original films! Some parts that are really scary!
Ash still works at a store with a title of "stock boy".

By The Woods, are you referring to the new Blair Witch? I know that The Woods was the original title before it was revealed to be a Blair Witch Project sequel.

The Visit is fairly good! I know a lot of people didn't like it (I didn't find it very scary) but it was still quite interesting.

Rev, good catch. I looked it up and the name of the movie I saw was actually The Forest. It's based upon this real life suicide forest in Japan. Apparently it's a remake of a Japanese film.

I also saw The Doll which was super creepy and not what I expected. I really enjoyed it.

I also recently watched Don't Blink on Netflix. I think this was probably an independent film. There's almost no gore, but it manages to be an intense psychological thriller with a paranormal element.

Watched a couple new horror films recently-

The Shallows- Whether this movie is horror or not is debatable but I guess if you consider Jaws horror this would definitely fit into that category. Basically a shark attack movie where the main heroine is trying to outsmart this really intelligent, killer shark. Very good movie and I always tend to like horror movies where you have a strong and smart female lead. I swear this shark was from Deep Blue Sea or something though... Seems way too smart but it'd be a pretty boring movie if it wasn't.

The Neon Demon- This is an art house horror film so that means it is all about the style and camera work. This is a very slow burning horror film and it can be pretty tough to tell what is exactly going on at points. Still, this is from the maker of Drive so if you liked that movie and like slow burning horror you might like this one. It is a bit weird, about an up and coming model with a natural beauty that makes her very desirable in the fashion industry. Some other models take notice and decide that they need to kill and devour her to take on her beauty. Very odd but enjoyable if you like art house horror.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I should mention director Lars Von Trier's Antichrist. It's a story of a couple whose child dies in a tragic accident that the wife (Charlotte Gainsbourg) feels responsible for. After she finds herself immobilized by guilt and depression, her psychiatrist husband (played by Willem Defoe) decides to take her into a cabin in the forest so that she can confront the things inside of herself that she's most afraid of while also trying to repair their ailing marriage. I don't want to say much more than that, other than to warn potential viewers of the extreme level of brutality and sexuality in the movie - this movie contains moments that I nearly had to look away from, and I never find myself doing that. I found myself a bit more interested in the first two-thirds of the movie - which is more concentrated on building an atmosphere of unease - than the "all hell breaks loose" finale, although the dreamlike final sequence pulled me back in. Beyond that, it's beautifully shot and extremely well-acted, but also quite bleak and disturbing. I'd recommended it if you're curious or you've seen some of the director's other work, or for those days when you're feeling just a little too upbeat ;)
