Prince's passing

Postby Gleebergloben123 » April 21st, 2016, 2:11 pm

Man, what a downer. He had some great songs. Purple Rain came out in 1984 I believe, a great summer. I was arcade gaming for 3 months straight, the last summer before the arcade business crumbled the next year. Songs like Purple Rain and When Doves Cry while gaming. Fun times. Seven, one of my favorite Prince songs, was played at my wedding.

Rest in Peace Prince.

I don't know why, but this one hurts more than Bowie or even Lemmy did. Maybe because he was still fairly young and seemed healthy? Maybe because he was such a constant presence on the radio when I was growing up? Maybe because he was just that gifted? The man could do it all at a high level: singer, songwriter (for himself and others), multi-instrument virtuoso, performer, producer, etc. I didn't always agree with his worldview, I appreciated him being such a independent-minded iconoclast who was fiercely protective of his creative work. I still have at least half of his officially-released work to check out, and there's a ridiculous amount in the vaults that will probably be made available. If you haven't listened to Sign O' the Times, that might be the best place to start.

I haven't listened to a lot of him, but man do I respect him. Musical genius. Sad to see him gone.

His legacy is more than musical, and may intersect with video gaming. Prince was zealous in asserting his copyright, such as pushing to have fan taken photos of him on non-commercial fansites removed.

He was fighting for artists and that they should be able to control and profit from their art, but when you create, promote, and sell commercial art, its commerce. You cant sell something and control it totally after that. Fair use, for one thing, but what is and is not fair use is tricky enough to involve lawsuits.

Prince had Universal issue a takedown of a Youtube takedown against a less than 30 second video a mom took of her toddler sort of dancing to one of his songs, with very poor quality audio. That case was just resolved a few months ago at the Circuit court level againt Prince and Universal, and affirming that fair use is not a defense for infringing, but that its not infringing at all and authorized by law and copyright holders need to take fair use into consideration before issuing a takedown notice.

The results may soften those youtube takedowns a bit.

Prince's surprise passing was certainly shocking even with the news of his recent hospital stay. However, besides being a fan this also reminded me what a crappy year it has been for music legends
Keith Emerson - March 2016
Glenn Frey - January 2016
David Bowie - January 2016
Lemmy - December 2015
Chris Squire - June 2015
While the last two were in 2015, they are both within the last 12 months. There may not be many progressive rock fans here but Chris Squire hit me pretty hard personally and there is no denying both Chris Squire and Keith Emerson were phenomenal musicians/songwriters (as all of the above are)

Unfortunately, I fear the rest of 2016 will take more legends

I still have purple rain on vinyl! I didn't get into a lot of his stuff , but coming from a musicians stand point, he was incredible and I have nothing but total respect !

I read that he died of a drug overdose. That would help explain why he was so protective of his music, he needed money for drugs.

Prince had problems with hip and knee pain due to years of jumping from heights during onstage performances, often in high heels or landing on his knees. Prince was a Jehovah's Witness, which prevented him from having surgery to alleviate the chronic pain he was in. I don't know the whole story, but Prince got on opioids to deal with the pain (not sure whether it was prescribed by a doctor or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was) and overdosed after relapsing on them (since his body's tolerance was no longer as high as it had been). People from within his camp knew there was a problem and contacted an addiction specialist, who sent his son to meet with Prince; he was one of the people who discovered his body.

Thanks for explaining that velcrozombie.

I have heard from J witnesses that they don't use drugs or alcohol due to their religious beliefs. I don't remember anything about medical procedures. It seems odd to me that a religion would not approve medical surgeries, but be ok with opioid use. Still.... It wouldn't be the oddest religious belief that I've heard of.
