There was an article posted recently on the odds of The Alabama Crimson Tide vs The Cleveland Browns. Could the most dominant team in college football in the last decade take an absolutely horrible NFL team? It's fun to think about as a huge football fan. I'd prob take the Browns by 10. Football nuts what are your thoughts?

My memory seems to be pinging me that this has been done at one time.

Answer is The Pros.

Even a fantastic team like The Tide has a front line that is going to be overwhelmed by a professional defensive line and linebackers. Same thing when flipped, in that the Browns offensive line would be able to handle the Tide D pretty well opening lanes or providing a pocket. The Pros probably have a playbook 5x as diverse, and more complicated means to find the opponents weaksauce.

So Pros. Probably not even all that close, like 27-10 lopsided.

Scotland I agree for the most part, but I think the score would be a little closer. My Facebook friends mostly say Tide. But if ever You seen an interview with a pro player and they are asked what is the big difference between college and Pro, they all say the same thing. The pro game is SO much faster. Probably why so many great athletes in college never translate well to the pros. They have to adjust to how lightning fast the game is on the next level. I agree Browns win.

49-9 Browns. How many college players make it to the NFL on average each year, even on the best teams? Not too many, and the Browns have 53 players who are good enough to play in the NFL. In the NBA it would maybe be a closer game, since one or two great players can make a huge difference, but generally I think any college team playing any pro team would get destroyed.

^^ love the avatar.

This topic comes up every few years on sports shows. A few years ago, it was the Jaguars vs. Alabama. I think the skill position players like QB, RB, WR could match up well with the pro team. Alabama has had a lot of offensive players go to the pros, and the Florida state team a few years ago had players make it to the pros who are stars, such as Devonta Freeman and Jameis Winston, for example.

I don't know if the offensive and defensive lineman made it to the pros, but that's why so few NFL teams have great offensive and defensive lines. NFL lineman would wear down college lineman over the course of a game, and the score may even be 49-9.

If the NFL draft were today, how many players from the Tide would end up either drafted or signed as undrafted free agents shortly thereafter? Let's pretend hypothetically that there have already been pre-draft workouts, a combine and player/team interviews. Have an answer? Ok. How many of THOSE guys will stick around on any team's NFL roster for a full season or more (not counting training camp bodies and not counting practice squad bodies) while actually seeing playing time in the process?

What number did you get?

The Browns have 53 such players. Do the Tide?

CharlieR you are correct. I remember reading that story about The Tide vs Jags. They had an expert Vegas odds maker make a hypothetical spread. He had Jags 38 Tide 17. Fun article.

I don't know whether this season's Alabama team could beat the Browns. But there's college teams in the past that I do believe could have beaten NFL teams. In 2001 I remember there was a discussion about the Miami Hurricanes playing the Cincinnati Bengals, if they'd win. I think the key here, is if the game is played at the college team's stadium. The Miami Hurricanes had a huge home field advantage at the Orange Bowl and I think they could've beaten a pathetic Bengals team. The 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers had an amazing team and they could have maybe beaten a crappy NFL team. I think a lot of posters here are giving way too much credit to the NFL teams. The worst teams in the NFL are absolutely terrible. And I don't buy the speed advantage for one minute over a team like 2001 Miami or even 2016 Alabama. The only reason I think the Browns could beat Alabama would be because the Tide have a young QB. But even with that, if the game was in Alabama, maybe they could win, but like I said there's been in my opinion other college teams in the past that were better equipped to pull it off. Are people forgetting just how terrible some of those old Cincinnati Bengals teams were. I'd actually bet that the 2001 Hurricanes would beat the Bengals if it was in Miami at the Orange Bowl.

As a Browns fan, even they could beat Alabama for the same reasons everyone's said; NFL play is way more advanced.

(They still might go 0-16 either way. Gotta preserve the #1 draft pick.)

I think so too probably. Alabama has a young qb. But I wouldn't be so high on terrible NFL teams. The Lions one year went 0-16, I have a hard time believing they would have dominated 2004 USC or 1995 Nebraska. No way, an atrocious NFL team is an atrocious team, period.
