Movies You Like That No One Else Does

Postby Retrology » February 12th, 2017, 1:16 pm

Very simple. Movies that you like that no one else does and movies you dislike that everyone likes.

The Grinch: Okay, perhaps it doesn't "belong" here since it is featured traditionally around Christmas time but it is hated by some. It's no masterpiece (the jokes work and don't work, some of the acting is dull) but I enjoyed it. I love how it gives the Grinch a backstory to why he is the way he is, and Jim Carrey, hit or miss in the role, put a lot of effort into it. The set pieces are also wonderful, creating a uniquely designed world that's creative and enticing.

The Fan: A psychological thriller set around baseball. It's not great but I enjoyed the lighting effects, Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes' performances, and I like how it tries to capture the emotional turmoil of some sports fans as well as sports athletes. It doesn't go far enough in my opinion, but it's something that's intriguing enough to watch the first time through, and doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

Cowboys and Aliens: The Premise alone, plus Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig's performances lift this one. I remember seeing this in theaters with a few friends not being disappointed.

Freddy Got Fingered - I saw this movie with a friend in the theater and hated it, but I gained some degree of respect for it after a roommate rented it a couple of years later. What seemed like an attempt at a typical love story upon first viewing revealed itself as satire the second time through, and there are scenes that stick with you through because of their absurdity and extremity - what other movie contains a scene where a son sprays his father with elephant semen straight from the source? I'm convinced that a reedited version that removed some of the obnoxious mugging and redubbed the whole thing in French would be hailed as a triumph of Dadaism.

Yeah, count me as another hater. I was (and still am) a huge fan of the cartoon and I saw the movie on opening night - and I even defended it at first, so well did the production design and makeup effects replicate the Grinch and the look of Whoville. I realized after a while that the movie took a 23-minute cartoon that is charming in its simple, fable-like structure and blew it up into a 105-minute mess (I originally thought the movie was two-and-a-half hours long before checking IMDB) - giving unnecessary back-stories and complex motivations to characters who worked in the original as archetypes and shoving a lot ham-fisted commentary about the commercialism of the holiday season into a 123 million-dollar movie. In the movie's defense, I don't think it's possible to make a good live-action adaptation of the source material into a full-length film without destroying the things that make it fun in the first place.

The Spirit - This movie got critically panned and was a commercial flop, and it was fantastic. It was clearly tongue-in-cheek but every review I read seemed to be unaware of that and was reviewing it as though it were a serious movie. It felt like I was the only one who understood the punchline to a great joke.

Nobody else but me likes FreeJack. It's so deliciously cheesy it's incredible. Plus, Emilio Estevez!

The 2003 Hulk movie directed by Ang Lee, which I even prefer to 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Whereas the latter movie plays things too safe and doesn't have any real standout moments, Ang Lee's take on the character is a fairly unique specimen of a movie. A lot of people dislike it due to not having as much action as one would expect and for having a ridiculous fight scene involving mutant dogs, but I like that it delves into the idea that the Hulk is comparable to a bewildered animal rather than just a badass who smashes things. If nothing else, I'd say it's worth watching for the editing, which is often bizarrely mesmerizing and helps the movie feel like more than just another early noughties superhero flick.

Plus Mick Jagger! Plus Buster Poindexter! Plus a Scorpions video at the end!

A real favorite of mine too, for that hobo's baffling speech about the eagle if nothing else. I have two VHS copies, one that I actually watch and a sealed copy I found by some miracle at Goodwill and couldn't pass up. I also have a sealed Johnny Mnemonic, a very similar movie that's great for all the same (terrible) reasons.

The Day Time Ended a.k.a Timewarp (1979)

A Charles Band movie from when he was just starting out, before he founded Full Moon Productions, or Empire Productions even.

Plot: A family moves into a new house in the desert & ... things start happening. Involving a time warp. Basically it's just an excuse to try out every single late 70's S/VFX technique. I like traditional FX, so this brightened my day.

Phantom Menace. I remember laying my eyes on Star Wars Episode I Racer (N64) at this daycare I used to go to when I was five years old, and it alone convinced me to watch the movie. My parents of course made sure I watched A New Hope first, before buying PM for me on VHS. All this ultimately turned me on to Star Wars, making it my favorite movie franchise. But for a while, Phantom Menace was my favorite one. It was so amazing to my childhood mind, and I even liked Jar Jar Binks. Of course, back then I was unaware of discrimination or stereotypes, which I do not condone in any way. Growing up, I was legitimately shocked to find out how much everyone else hated the movie. I actually felt like an island in a tempest sea, fearing that admitting my love for the film would just be asking to be swept away by a tidal wave of death threats. OK, maybe I was just thinking too deeply into it, but I still have a soft spot for it as well as the other Star Wars prequels. Besides, can't we all just hate Star Wars: The Clone Wars (the movie, not the TV series that came afterward)?

I also liked The Phantom Menace. Jar-Jar was funny when I was 10. Today he's annoying, but I can still appreciate the film. For all its problems, it's probably closest to the franchise's serial roots.

I also like Krull; it almost has the same feel as Ray Harryhausen's old films, but with 80's FX. Also has a great score by James Horne, and a large world which seems perfect for a series of adventures. And the Widow of the Web is cool.

I have watched a bunch of the old serials (TCM plays them from time to time) and I don't see this in TPM to the level its in A New Hope. For instance, serials were known for cliffhangers which a feature length movie has to do with tension filled death traps like the the Falcon getting pulled into the Death Star and Death Star garbage pit scene. Does TPM have scenes like that? There are some good serial like elements in both, so I'm not disputing its like a serial, just not as close at ANH.

Serials, like Flash Gordon, for instance, may slowly grow the cast of heroes, as it slowly adds in Thun, Prince Barin or Brian Blessed (wrong Flash Gordon, I know...but come on...Brian Blessed). We see happen in both ANH and TPM. I think TPM stays too long on location on Tatooine. Look at how the action keeps changing in ANH from space to desert planet to spaceport to small moon...no, that's not a moon...you get the idea. You can enjoy TPM, but ANH is the closer to the old serials, in my opinion.

You are man narrow of purpose and wide of vision, sir! Krull is an underappreciated movie, but it does have lots of faults. The biggest being that it could have been a great fun movie in the vein of the Harryhausen Sinbad or Clash of Titans (Release the Kraken!), but I think I read that after Dragonslayer did poorly at the box office, the movie added in the science fiction elements. Its a shame the big Boss isn't a Harryhausen monster, because the movie needed a bit more of that. Still, its got charm.
