Questions Regarding Caring for Cats?

Dear Dave the Video Game Critic/others?

I am considering getting a kitten soon because I love cats. Before I get a cat, I would like to know how to take care of them properly such as how to feed them, how to clean the kitty litter, what to do when you go on long out of country trips and how to prevent scratching which can cause pain and furniture damage. If you have any tips I would love to hear from you.

Thanks!

I didn't see this thread, or I would have replied earlier. Sorry for the wait.

The basics really aren't much to deal with. Feed the cat twice a day. Clear out the kitty litter with a litter scoop once a day if possible. Leave the cat with a friend or relative if you can't be there.

Scratching is a bit more of an issue but shouldn't be insurmountable. I can't really speak from experience, as the cats that I've had have never been scratchers, but if it is a problem, train the cat to use a scratching post instead of your furniture. You can do this with a squirt from a water bottle and a sharp "No!" if it claws the furniture and a reward ("Good kitty!") it if it claws the post. Trimming the cat's claws like fingernails is also supposed to help. If you need more information, there's plenty out there on the Internet if you search for it.

I would also recommend some sort of entertainment for the cat. Get a cheap laser pointer and some stuffed balls for the cat to chase and bat around.

Hope this helps!
