New TV?

Postby DaHeckIzDat » January 24th, 2018, 1:45 pm

I'm planning on using my tax refund this year to by a shiny new TV! Can anyone recommend the best one for playing video games, preferably less than $500?

A Philco Predicta: https://www.tvhistory.tv/1950-59-PHILCO.htm

Hook up an Atari 2600, plug in a Spacewar Cart, and it's the closest you'll come to owning a Computer Space cabinet without, you know, buying a Computer Space cabinet. ;)

Honestly, TCL makes a great 4K TV for the money. You should be able to snag a 50” or 55” with that budget.

Cool. At first I thought I wanted a smart tv, but then I remembered that I don't have cable, and I can watch Netflix and Hulu from my PS4, so I didn't really need one.

It's actually getting hard to find a new TV that's not a smart TV. Maybe if you order directly from the manufacturer.

First step is deciding which size you want. This past November, I bought a brand new TV for the first time ever. Before that, I always saved money by getting hand-me-downs or buying used on Craigslist. I had a 37" Sharp 720p TV in the living room for years, and upgraded to a 55" Samsung 4K TV. It was a big adjustment and took my eyes awhile to get used to the big change in size and picture. My eyes watered while playing games for the first week or so. Frankly, I could have went smaller, like 50" or so, and been fine, but whatever. I'm used to it now.

Anyway, I've always liked Samsungs, so I geared my search that way, and did a lot of research. Ultimately, I went with the Samsung UN55MU6290. It just so happens to cost exactly $500. (It's MSRP is $699, but it's always on sale for $499.) It's very full-featured for that price... it's 4K, with Smart TV features, and about everything else you would hope to have at that price point. At that price, I highly recommend it as a good gaming TV. But again, if you're looking smaller (such as a 40" TV for a bedroom), then you can get an even better quality model for $500.

I measured the space inside my entertainment center, and it looks like the biggest I'll be able to get is a 40", unless I got rid of it and bought a new one... which seems like way more work than is necessary.

Ok. At certain sizes, the benefits of 4K is negligible or nonexistent. It depends on how close you sit to the TV too. (There are diagrams online that give this info.) At 40", you're probably fine going with a 1080p TV, and focusing on the other features. It'll save you money too. Again, I've always been partial to the look and picture quality of Samsung models, but I know some people swear by other brands too. At 40", and sticking to 1080p, you should be able to get a quality gaming TV for well under $500.

I’m not one that worries about 4K and highest resolution, etc. I replaced my decade old Sharp TV with a new Sharp 43” with Roku installed. I honestly didn’t know what Roku even was (it’s an OS basically), but I’m glad it’s there—interface is super easy to use and remote is real simple, like 10 buttons total. I can also use my phone as a remote, which comes in handy.

I think it was $280.
