Trine (PC and PS3, 2009) - (A)

Featuring lush, dazzling visuals, terrific voice acting, and compelling gameplay, Trine combines elements of action games, puzzle games, RPGs, and platformers to create a truly memorable experience. One of the most visually-stunning games ever created - and great fun to boot - it's hard to imagine anyone not being utterly charmed by Trine.  Recalling The Lost Vikings with its puzzle-platformer mechanics, the player can switch between three characters - a knight, a wizard, and a thief, each with their own unique set of abilities.  There are many ways you can approach the obstacles you face in the levels.  Do you want to have the wizard create a path across using his powers, or do you want to have the thief swing across with her grappling hook?  While Trine is generally slow-paced, there is lots of action to be seen in the game as well.  Most of the enemies you'll fight are endlessly-generating skeletons, but you'll also face off against giant boss monsters - you can use the knight to slash at them or the thief to shoot arrows at them, but the wizard has no offensive abilities beyond creating b,oxes on dropping them on enemy heads (which, of course, is always fun).  As you progress through the game, you will level up, collect experience, find new weapons, learn new abilities, and become more powerful.  Overall, despite the repetitive nature of the combat, Trine is a highly-recommended game for those craving a visual treat and a fun physics-based puzzle-platformer.  The sequel, Trine 2, is also available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

I played the PC version of Trine.  It recommended that you use a gamepad for playing.
