Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth (Wii)

This game is a remake of Castlevania: The Adventure for the original Gameboy. It is widely regarded as a bad game...I would say it's the slowest in the series, and at that point Konami didn't really know the hardware.

This game is only available via the WiiWare service.

I purchased Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth a little over a month ago and have played it nearly every day since. It is a traditional side-scrolling Castlevania game, featuring enemies from many of the games in the series, and branching paths that can be opened via keys scattered throughout the levels. You can play through the game straight, or you can push yourself to survive while holding said keys, instead of the normal sub-weapons, and searching for new paths. In this way, the game forces you to get better or die. Finding all the paths is rewarding enough, but the game is challenging, so beating a level or exploring a new area feels like an accomplishment. The graphics are at a level somewhere between SNES and PSX, and the music rocks. While the songs are pure Castlevania, the synths used to make it would fit nicely in the Sunset Riders-era Konami. The controls are perhaps the best part. Once you've tried the game, you have the choice (via the option menu) to change your jumping style. With this small change, you can control protagonist Christopher Belmont's jumps as you would have in an NES-era game, or as you would in later games in the series. After you've beaten a level, you have the option to use a level select to jump to the last level you were on - just make sure to go back to the start screen so the system will prompt you to save.

At its' core, Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth is a lovingly produced throwback with great control and content. A good purchase and play, it can be yours for only $10.

Bravo, friend!  Great review.  You encapsulated it quite well.  I also agree with your score.

Suffice it to say that you know before you purchase the game if you are the intended audience.  If you like Castlevania, you'll like Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth.
