Another excellent review.  And I am glad Tempest managed to get into the A-plateau.  It is a fantastic port of one of the most difficult coin-ops from my youth.  The trackball makes its a pleasure to play.

I do disagree with the Critic's comment about it being difficult to see the spikes.  Especially when you finish a level and are warned to "AVOID SPIKES".  If you don't proactively shoot them down to keep a row or two clear they will kill you if you don't avoid 'em.

Tempest just rocks on the 5200!!!

This looks really good and I'm glad that this game was released. I'm also glad you went with the higher score as I feel the game was designed with the ball in mind. Good reivew!
Thank goodness some kind-hearted souls took it upon themselves to resurrect (and finish) this lost treasure.
The original programmer finished it, I got to meet him and many others(such as David Crane) when I went to CGE back in 2010.  He was quite impressed with my first homebrew, Medieval Mayhem.  From AtariAge:
the original Atari 5200 Tempest programmer, Keithen Hayenga, worked to complete Tempest so it could finally see the light of day in completed form
It's really SAD that the only home ported versions of Tempest are on the 5200 and the Jaguar (which are the TOP TWO Worst Atari consoles PERIOD), though it's a good thing it was also brought to the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation as well.

Speaking of Jaguar, I also came across your "White Men Can't Jump" review.
And I KNOW this is going off topic, but there are actually THREE games I've heard of that are worse and I wanted to see exposed on here. They are:

Action 52 (NES) (and there was a Genesis version too. Which also sucked, but wasn't NEARLY as bad)
Desert Bus (Sega CD) See review (credit stanburdman): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTm4MqfARw4
And Finally...
Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (3DO) (The REAL Worst game of all time!)

But Yes, good review of Tempest 5200, I like how you pointed out what the Trak-Ball could do. And I Can't wait to see what your next reviews are like.
(and again I apologize for going off topic, I just really wanna see you tear those games apart)

I'd love to see the critics take on 'Plumbers don't wear ties'

That said, Killing Zone for the PS1 was according to some quarters, the worst fighter ever; I recall a review index in the back of a magazine giving it 1%

I did a review for it in the review forum long ago, though I personally don't think it's as bad as 1%.

There's an idea for a special; 'the critics worst games ever, special'

Tempest was put out as part of Microsoft Arcade for the PC years ago.

I always love reading Worst Games Ever articles so if you did one I think it would be a big hit. Nothing better then reading about horrible games.
