I was hoping this would be a good Halloween game, but it mostly sucked.

I saw that there was a silent hill game out for the Vita and I said YES!
Then I looked at it and thought NO WAY.
So you review cements what I thought. It is a shame. I just looks like a do do.

You should try out the first Obscure game, now that's a good choice for Halloween.

Do I sense an awesome Smashing Pumpkins reference at the end of this review?

Hmm... It seems like Silent Hill has really gone downhill lately... The first three games were great (especially 1 and 2) but since then it seems like the series has gone slowly downhill... I don't understand why they would try to do an overhead horror game...

Well, I can't say I didn't see that coming. I had a feeling this was a horrible idea the moment I first saw it. The only reason I can think that they'd do this is so they could compete with Diablo 3 or something.

You giving this an F has actually made me more curious about it
than if you had given it a C or D. Making Silent Hill into a top-down
dungeon crawler seems like a terrible idea, but I like Wayforward as a
developer, and trying something this drastically different at least
has my attention.
As for the Silent Hill series going downhill...I don't know. Shattered
Memories was a really good game in my opinion, and it sold 1 million
copies overall. Downpour was a huge flop though, both critically and
commercially (I don't have an opinion on it, not having played more
than a few hours). Konami realizes how far the series has fallen, and
they have asked Hideo "Metal Gear Solid" Kojima to work on the next
entry. That should be interesting, and Kojima's name will probably
at least make the next game sell some more copies.

Silent Hill is going to continue to slide downhill until they find a poet or a genuine artist/storyteller who can make us care about flawed people, and who can imagine how our sins might come back to punish us in a way makes the grotesque beautiful.
Without an info dump.
Shouldn't be hard. There are folks who write horror manga dedicated to this very thing, or they could hire anyone who put time in on Vertigo comics. Combine them with the right deviantart account, and...
Unfortunately, those who sign the checks aren't noted for their empathy or imagination.
Hideo Kojima can at least nail the visuals and tragic backstory...but we're going to get a jackhammer approach to exploring every single theme.
At least we'll see the return of a sense of surreal humor.
