2016/3/27: Turbografx-16: Download (Japan), Override (Japan)

These are two outstanding shooters, but keep in mind you'll need a Japanese PC Engine or an adapter to play them.

Speaking of adapter, this TG-16/PCE Everdrive was recently on ebay.

You said neither of these games will run natively on an American system, so maybe this does not help.

Back in the day I picked up a green board that simply swaps the inputs to the card. I got it off Ebay but it doesn't look like they are available anymore, which is a shame.

The prospect of picking up a Japanese PC Engine might not be too bad however, considering how easily my SG-1000 worked as far as power and video hookups. You'll need to do your research though.

Nice set of reviews. I own Download but have never played Override, I might have to buy that one.

As far as adapters, I have one (if anyone wants to buy it) but honestly I'd recommend buying a Japanese PC Engine instead. The adapters tend to be a tight fit and don't lend themselves well to repeated use. If you're going to buy for the Turbografx/PC Engine your best bet is a PC Engine Duo R (or RX) and a U.S. Turbografx (base model). That will allow you to play all games (Japanese and English), CD games, and the works.

Critic, I know you're a big fan of shooters, so these two games got me thinking: Given the choice between side-scrolling or vertical-scrolling shooters, which would you choose as your preference if you could only choose one?

Jap ROMs will play on TG-16 through Turbo Everdrive with no problem.

The only region lock out was the pins on the respective systems.

I picked up "Download" in a PC Engine lot a long time ago, never paid any attention to it until I read your review. Great game!

Occasionally, some guy out of the UK will put up a bunch of HuCard-TG16 adapters for around $80, but I haven't seen 'em in a while. In the absence of that, I'm in agreement with Rev... buy a PC Engine Core Grafx or better (if you are only interested in the HuCards) for about that same price or if you want the whole works, find a PC Engine Duo R or the like for a couple hundred and have access to all regions of CD games as well. If you already have TG16 controllers, a simple cable will also allow those to be used on the PC engine.

Speaking of playing Turbo Grafx and PC Engines games, here is something Hyperkin announced

Before you look and start drewling, this was announced on April 1st, and is likely just a joke.

Once you start thinking on its features (like region free HUcard support without some pin swapping mechanism), and limited market, it doesn't make sense...but for one brief shining moment there was at least the dream of a modern remake of a TurboExpress with neat bells and whistles.
