If I recall correctly, at the time it got great reviews. It was also made by Silicon Knights who also did Gamecube's Eternal Darkness.

Denis Dyack turned out to be a complete maniac. On the plus side he did deliver one of my favorite games of all time, Eternal Darkness...so he can't be all bad. :)

Message to the people who gave this a reader's score of A-. Are you just trolling right now, or do you really believe that? What do you like about this game so much?

I dunno, I felt like the lack of an angelic choir kinda lessened the effect.

Long time lurker, now starting to post. I agree for the most part with this review. Playing through the various Legacy of Kain games really is more of an exercise in story appreciation than game play. I personally like the whole "suck blood out of them with magic power" bit that the game introduced, even though you seem to have not. The game was rough and hard to play back in the 90's, but had style, which made RPG people of the time want to like it, but I could never quite love this series like others of the time.

If you really want to experience the best parts of the Legacy of Kain series, you can watch all the cutscenes on youtube. They will make you want to play the early legacy of Kain/Soulreaver games... but oof, none of those have aged well.

In a completely unrelated note, I personally own several RPGs that aren't on your list Critic, if you ever want another RPG guy I would love to try writing a few reviews.
