Who says I only review games from last century? Here's my review of Nintendo latest Metroid adventure for the 3DS.
Comments welcome.

When you say the d-pad doesn’t work it sort of gives the impression the developers just arbitrarily didn’t allow the d-pad to be used. But there are 4 powers that are mapped to the d-pad buttons, so they really didn’t have enough buttons to give that option. That seems like it could be more clear in your review. I’ll admit to forgetting and trying to use the d pad quite a few times while I played, but the alternative would have been more touchscreen controls, which I would not have liked. I feel like they offered the best control scheme given the amount of buttons they had to work with.

Good point I will try to clarify that.

I was super hyped about SR, as Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time. I thought SR was really well done and "a proper sequel " is a great description. I also struggled with the controls as sometimes I needed to use/hold the analog stick, a face button, and both shoulder buttons at the same time. That's probably standard stuff for modern players, but as a retro gamer, it just was too much for me.

I could have done without the precision firing and Melee stuff.

As excited as I was, I quit halfway through. But I agree with the B+ score. if there ever another console to play it on, I'll try it again.

It did make me want to play the GBA metroids though.

This game is fine, but I'm in Area 6 now and I find it gets a little bit boring and tedious. I mean, it plays fine, but the 'sense of progression' isn't really there for me. It just feel like I'm doing all the same stuff over and over again.

Amusing isn't it? The anger about Metroid:Federation Force spurred Nintendo to put out an actual Metroid game, I think it's too little too late.

Hey critic, I was looking at your Metroid reviews and I noticed a few things that made me question if you knew about “Metroid II: Return of Samus” for the original Gameboy, which was the sequel game in between the original Metroid and Super Metroid, or if it just doesn’t spark your interest. The things I noticed are:

[*] There’s no review of “Metroid II: Return of Samus“ for the original Gameboy
[*] In the review of the original Metroid for NES, you refer to Super Metroid as its sequel. Not it’s direct sequel, but there’s no mention again of Metroid II.
[*] Although you make special note that “Metroid: Zero Mission” for the GBA is a remake of the NES original Metroid, you don’t mention that this game is a remake of “Metroid II: Return of Samus”

So anyway I’m just curious, and if there is interest, I do have extra copies of that game.

If/When I get a 2DS XL, this is one of the first games I want to get. Metroid II GB was a big influence on me growing up (due to being unique on the Game Boy for as close to an open world as you could get), and I would be curious to see what aesthetic changes were made. That, and the Lore additions.

I gotta say, I loved the 3D so much on this game, I don’t think I could do without it. The depthy scenery added to the background really advanced the aesthetic of this game over the original Metroid II. It’s a shame they don’t make the 3DS anymore.

I think I've heard of Metroid 2 but never tried it. Might need to put that on the list, as a quality Game Boy original.
