2017/11/23: Genesis: Zero Wing (Europe), Steel Empire

Postby VideoGameCritic » November 23rd, 2017, 11:58 am

Hopefully these two Genesis reviews will enhance your Thanksgiving holiday.

These are actually re-reviews. I raised the grade of Zero Wing (C -> B-) and lowered Steel Empire (B -> C+).

Thoughts?

I disagree with the Steel Empire review. It is a fab game. At least a b plus.
The reason is that it was a fun game. Total nonsense but one of the first steam punk games that I played.

Yeah, I don't get what's up with the Steel Empire review. The game has some slowdown, but it's nothing like the outright choppiness that the review seems to be describing and certainly not enough to spoil the game. That's literally the only complaint the review actually raises, so the idea that the gameplay is "a little hollow" has me scratching my head. The game is full of awesome stuff; the dynamics and variety of the second level alone warrant at least a B. And you get to fly a blimp to the moon!

Well, the sound effects are pretty bad, and the intro and intermissions are seizure inducing.
I wouldn't say they spoil the game (it's an above average score) but feels a little clunky.

What brought on replaying these shooters at Thanksgiving?

I recently showed the famous Zero Wing intro to a friend who had never seen it. We started playing and liked it.
As for Steel Empire, that got on my radar while reviewing Sine Mora EX for the Switch.

Hey, Zero Wing.. Always good to read about that. I bought the game years ago because of the novelty of it. I was surprised that it works fine in a regular Genesis, despite being a Mega Drive game. Decent game too, surprisingly. "All your base are belong to us" is about as old school as internet memes get, so I figured the game's price would have gone done over the years. But looking at ebay today, it seems the opposite is true. I probably spent $15-$20 on mine years ago, and it now sells for like $35-$50, or more.

As for Steel Empire, was the Retron used for the review? If so, I wonder if that could be the difference in the sound and slowdown issues. Personally I've never played the game, but just a thought based on the other reader responses here.

I did NOT use the Retron for this review.

Good to know. I didn't think you did, but figured I'd throw out the suggestion in case it explained the discrepancy.
