Critic, if you like Tetris Game Boy, I recommend you to review the update Game Boy Color port under the name Tetris DX which includes battery save and additional content not found in the original version. Info on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_(Game_Boy)#Tetris_DX

I'm not as familiar with Game Boy Tetris.
But when I play the Nintendo NES version, I need to start at level 9. Starting at the slowest speed it's so slow that it's almost unplayable for me.

Nice! I still like the game too.... You should also give Tetris 2 on the Game Boy a try. I wonder if you'll hate it as much as I do...

Tetris is my kryptonite. Difficulty 9?
I love dancing in the cemetery with Ghouls N' Ghosts. I won't ever admit to myself how often I replay Battletoads, thrilling to the white knuckle rush of adrenaline where I needed to stop consciously existing long enough to survive stage 3. And I've even played Koei games for fun.
But I can't leave the easiest levels of Tetris, without building a tower straight to a Game Over.
This might explain why my approach to organizing a room has suspiciously similar results to an 80's rock band armed with live grenades, if one is being charitable, but the point is...
It's a small miracle that we can all enjoy this game. Nintendo really nailed the difficulty settings, and the presentation too, despite the bare bones minimalist aesthetic.
It really earns that A.
No wonder why it made them the undisputed kings of the portable market.

On the level 9 this game is perfection, very addictive.
I would recomend to you Ninja Gaiden Shadow on Game Boy, this game is awesome, it's a bit different from NES Ninja Gaiden, I know you like Ninjas and you will like this game.
