This is a 1983 shooter for the SG-1000 - Sega's first system (released only in Japan).

First, awesome to review an SG 1000 game.

Second, Sega and submarine games have a long history going back to 1966s electro mechanical Periscope.

Always enjoy a Sega review, might give this another go dismissed it when I first played after two waves.

It’s a shame there is hardly any videos of Sega’s electro-mechanical games they are big beasts.

As for the review itself, I liked its brevity. That your submarine is slow could be gameplay masquerading as realism, as this was really how it was for submarines - surface vessels move quicker since they are probably longer, larger engines, and have far less drag. Those 'mines' you dodge are probably more likely depth charges. When you say the collision detection is not on your side, its again more 'gameplay masquerading as realism' - depth charges don't need to hit your submarine directing to damage or sink a submarine.

When you mention the audio, I'm reminded of a handheld game where you hunt a submarine solely on audio! Its a shame there is not a two player version, as I could see lots of Combat-like variations like an invisible submarine or boats that bounce back torpedoes or send trails of depth charges down on you. Maybe it needs a good hack.

For electro-mechanicals, yeah, it would be nice to have some video out there to see. I did a video of Midway's Sea Devil
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB5ETE433wA - if you skip to about 1:30 you'll see the gameplay. (This is from Asbury Park, NJ as the Silver Ball museum)

I took a screenshot. This game is from 1976

and here is 1969's Sea Raider

skip to about 2:30 for gameplay. Here is a screen shot (this is from a restoration video)

You can see that the 1976 game looks far better than the 1969 game. Sega Periscope was probably close to 1969s Sea Devil. I have played Sea Devil, but I don't recall playing the 1960s versions.
