Here are two NEW Genesis reviews. Pitfall is so-so but grew on me over time.
Calibur 50 is kind of fun and rare, but not quite good enough for a hidden gem icon.

I think the Atari Jaguar was the best version of Nu Pitfall. The raw power of 64 bit, do the math.
Though I agree with the summation of how the game actually plays. It looks lush it just does not play lush.
Now I am playing Rise of the tomb raider to see if I agree with your review.

Nice reviews!
Two notes: "Calibur" in the review title? I think you've got a certain Dreamcast game on the brain. The title of the game is Caliber .50 AFAIK, with a period (decimal) before the 50.
And I'm not so sure about the claim that the Genesis version of Pitfall: TMA is widely regarded as best -- I've seen multiple people say the Sega CD version is the very best, with the Genesis version not far behind. With that in mind, I hope a review of that Sega CD version is coming.

I had the Pitfall the Mayan Adventure for SNES back in the day, and I thought that it was boring even back then.
I imagine that the Genesis version is the same but with slightly less good graphics.

Come on, any anything beat the p o w e r of the Atari Jaguar!?! 64 Bit do the math!!!
I just had a look and the graphics are better on the Mega CD. Plus you have the great genesis megadrive controller to play with.

Goldenband - you're right - it should have been Caliber 50, not Calibur.
Guess I was thinking about Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast!

I thought this game on Sega CD was awesome fun and a great Pitfall sequel. Loved the soundtrack and the animation. It's an A game to me.

Looking at an arcade replay, the orange blobs in Caliber .50 are supposed to be spent shell-casings. They’re ludicrously oversized there, too, though.

I believe that much like the 32X version of Pitfall, the Jaguar port runs at a very inconsistent 30 fps.
Sega CD gets my vote with its cd soundtrack combined with all the positive attributes of the regular Genesis version like its smooth 60 fps, higher detailed backdrops than the SNES version, and more fluid controls.
I believe one of the Digital Foundry Retro videos touched upon the various differences of this one, if anyone follows that YouTube channel.
