I always assumed that the NES Ghosts n' Goblins was Capcom's NES version of the arcade Ghouls n' Ghosts, but everyone seems to be talking as if Ghosts n' Goblins on the NES was the original.  Have I been mistaken?
Nope.  Ghosts and Goblins in the arcade came first.  It was actually a common arcade machine in the '80s and was among my favorites (despite its difficulty).  The NES game was a port of the arcade game -- and a good one at that.  Although the graphics aren't picture perfect, the game follows the arcade version in terms of levels and sequence of events rather well.  Ghouls and Ghosts was an arcade sequel, that was later ported to Genesis... and a good thing too because I didn't see that many Ghouls and Ghosts machines around.
Did I go too low on Ghosts and Goblins?  Should it be bumped up to a B?
I think it should be bumped to an A

But yeah, GnG has always been a favorite of mine for the system. Sure it's anything but easy, but compare to, say, Punch-Out. It's hardly a walk in the park either (I think it's much harder than GnG. I've beaten GnG many times, but can't even get past the second fight in the final tournament in PO), and it's always been hailed as one of the greatest NES games of all time.

I'd probably give it a B- too. I think its a cool game, but I struggled with it right from the start. Ninja Gaiden I think its about as good as this game, but a little less frustrating.

So B- is about right in my book.

A- was generous.

I'd also probably lower Contra, B+ As the game is too easy with the life cheats and too hard and boring without them.

Your first instinct is probably the correct one.

It's too early for April Fools Jokes. Contra is not a walk in the park, and I'm lucky to have beaten the Arcade version my friend owns!

No, it's NOT easy at all on its own, that is my point. The cheat for free lives makes it easy, UP,DOWN,UP,DOWN,L,R,... 30 lives is too many, and only 3 on its own, is not enough.

Contra is a cool game, but the code makes it too easy, and I can't get passed level 1 without the controller cheat.

I don't like when games have a insane difficulty curve.

Ghosts n Goblins does need a higher score actually, its almost as good as the godly snes version.
But it is damn frustrating so I guess by instinct you lowered the score.
Oh, and Jake, I can beat up to level three of contra before struggling without the 30 lives code so nyah

If I remember correctly, the game has a built-in stage select, so the GG may not be necessary.

Although I would consider the NES Ghosts 'N Goblins a classic, I think the Critic's B- is justifiable.  The graphics are very jittery, which makes the already rough difficulty even worse.  The high difficulty can be overcome with practice, but some sections of the game can be unfairly cheap.
