Games you like that nobody else does?

Postby DaHeckIzDat1 » February 19th, 2015, 8:53 am

Are there any games you like that everybody else seems to hate?  For me, that's the JRPG Nier.  I don't understand the hate that game gets.  Sure, the combat isn't much more than hack-n-slash, and the graphics would look mediocre on the PS2, but the story is good and doesn't get bogged down by endless cutscenes.  And since it has more action-y combat instead of turn based, you'd think it would be more accepted by western gamers.  Whatever the reason, this is still in my top ten favorite games list.

Smashing Drive on the GameCube. I'll never understand why it's so panned. It's a very fun arcade style racing game, despite the subpar visuals.

Space War.  It may not have aged well, but it was one of the first games we got for our Atari so I have fond memories of playing it with family and friends.

I've actually heard a lot of people praise Nier as an underrated gem. Guess I'll have to give it a look!

For me, Star Ocean: The Second Story comes to mind. That game has an amazing skill system that lets you improve cooking, item creation, artistic ability, music composition, animal husbandry, and a host of other abilities alongside combat-oriented ones. It has a really bad translation and horrible voice acting but the world and characters are pretty interesting, although not as top-notch as a Final Fantasy or Shin Megami Tensei title. Battles are real-time like the Tales games but take place in a fully three-dimensional space, which offered something different from the prevailing trends in JRPGs of the time.

@DaHeckIzDat - NiER is an EXCELLENT game.  On top of the great combat, surprisingly deep story and cool art style it has one of the greatest video game soundtracks ever created.  There are soundtracks that I *like* more-- Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Mega Man 2, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, etc.  But gun to my head, NiER has the best soundtrack ever.  I haven't gotten into the rest of the Drakkengard games, but NiER justifies it's cult following.

It may sound crazy, but I actually like Club Drive for the Jaguar. It allows you to just relax and drive, which is very refreshing compared to every other car title where there's always something you have to worry about. I'm a sucker for early 3d and love when it's done well. The San Francisco level is nice.

Heavy Rain
Omikron
Thief 3...and to an extent, the new Thief.
Nintendo Baseball...the original NES one, for some reason I prefer it to any other.
Rise of the Dragon
The adventures of Willy Beamish
TrickStyle
Skate or Die 2

You're right, I should have mentioned that. I've got several of those tracks on my mp3 player.
