200 Things Every Gamer Should Know - Video Game Literacy

Postby scotland » June 26th, 2015, 6:52 pm

If you have not seen it, Dave has a Glossary of Video Game Terms:
http://videogamecritic.com/extras/info/glossary.htm

A companion article could be on "Video Game Literacy". This was a term that came out in the 80s about What Everyone Should Know, and was by subject. For instance, American Football Literacy would not just be about the terms of the game, like roughing, holding, or sackng, but on the famous players, famous plays, famous events, etc. If you don't know about the Immaculate Reception, what kind of American football fan are you?

We could make it a list, and taking Logan's number from his thread, 200 Things Every Gamer Should Know:

Here is a start:

1. Urban Legend or Reality - the burial of the Atari 2600 E.T. cartridges in September 1983. As of 2014, there is strong evidence that at least some cartridges were indeed dumped at the Alamogordo, NM landfill.

2. Nolan Bushnell is a co-founder of Atari, Inc and led the company in its first formative years. He is considered a very important person in the early history of video games.

3. Hyrule is the fantasy land setting of many of Nintendo's Legend of Zelda games. Its most famous relic is the Triforce, composed of three separate pieces representing Power, Wisdom and Courage.

What do you think? Interesting enough to build on?

4) Generations -- The history of videogame consoles is divided into generations (or eras) that place each console with its contemporaries. It is generally agreed that there have been 8 generations, although there is often debate regarding which generation a particular console belongs in.

Gentlegamer had a post saying basically there never was a controversy about the ET dumping. I strongly disagree, that yes, there was (or remains) a controversy, and pointed out threads on this site, AtariAge, and Scopes discussing it as evidence of people talking about it as proof a controversy existed.

I decided to move those two posts to an ET specific one, but I may have done it incorrectly. For Gentlegamer's assertion, please see the Legend is True: E.T. cartridges found in Landfill thread in Video Games General
