Pull the cartridge from the clam case, slam it in the console, turn it on.
And the games are so easy and fun to play.

On the other hand, the new consoles make it a real chore just to start up a game.
The pick-up-and-play dynamic is totally gone from this generation - especially if you're online.

This is exactly it. The PS4 has breathtaking graphics, and the games can be incredibly involved stories. But most of my gaming these days is in increments of 45 minutes or less. It's not even worth turning on the PS4 for that length of time. Genny FTW!

For me my top 5 most used consoles of all time are:

1. SNES
2. Genesis
3. PS2
4. N64
5. PS1

These are the consoles I grew up with (well that I was old enough to play religiously) and have continued to play them a lot throughout the years.

DS (Had one for 8 years until it and my games got lost at a Dentist's Office)
GameCube
3DS (Upgraded to the 2DS in 2013, still doesn't quite have the same amount of time as the Cube)
Saturn
GBA
N64 (I hope to one day rectify this)
Wii
Xbox 360 (Lots of Skyrim was played Freshman year of Undergrad)

Although atm only the 2DS gets any play since I don't have the moolah for a TV to hook up my Saturn, and I left the Cube at my parent's.

I think we all want to know the story about how this went down.

Not much to tell, I took the pack with me to the Dentist's, left it in the Waiting Room during the check-up and forgot about it for a few hours. I called up the office and they didn't have it, that was that. \ '_' /

2. Wii U
3. Ps2
4.Genesis
5. Nes

( Would've put pc as number 2 or 3 but I assumed we were doing consoles only.

PSX and N64. I just plain love that generation.

1. NES (by far...probably three times as much as 2.)
2. Genesis/Megadrive
3. PS1
4. Game Boy (didn't own many games; however, I constantly traded and borrowed from friends and, courtesy of the HUGE portable rechargeable battery pack, I took it everywhere)
5. XBox 360
6. PS2
7. Wii
8. DSLite
9. PS3
10. Dreamcast
11. SNES
12. Gamecube
13. Wii U
14. Saturn

For the most part, these rankings have little to do with quality and almost everything to do with the level of responsibility and the number of other interests I had at any given time. Most of the top systems on the list were those that I owned in grade school, before I started playing music and becoming more social. The spike in more modern consoles (360, PS2 and Wii) came from a period 4-5 years ago where I was struggling with depression and anxiety while trying not to flunk out of college and playing more games as a means of escape.

You are not alone in using gaming as an escape.

I also note the Saturn on the bottom of your list, and its on the bottom of mine too. Can Saturn lovers help us out finding the console's killer apps.

Yes the Saturn is at the bottom of mine as well. Just a small library for me and most of the good ones Dave has reviewed are wicked expensive!
