Straightforward. If you were an RPG buff, which games would people who aren't RPG fans enjoy?

Chrono Trigger
Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi series
Fire Emblem Awakening
Maple Story (PC)

I'd actually recommend Persona 4 or Persona 5. They are social simulation games that gradually feed you RPG gameplay in manageable chunks.

I would nominate South Park: The Stick of Truth. It's RPG-lite, but it is well made and offers RPG beginners a taste of turned-based combat.

Earthbound is pretty much the only JRPG that I can stand.

Chrono Trigger- The game requires zero grinding, the story is always moving forward, and the overall campaign is only about 15 hours. The combat system also has a very action-like turn battle system with enemies moving around the field. It also has a pretty solid story and you care for the characters.

Paper Mario series (64 or NGC titles): both titles could fit under the RPGs for beginners categories but they also offer enjoyable stories, a more action based combat system, and are easy to get into. Super Mario RPG also fits into this category.

It's also quotable as hell too. "Onett police are infamous for closing roads if something is going on. We are going for the world record." Makes me burst out laughing every time I see that quote.

I'd recommand games like Zelda: A Link to the Past, the Game Boy Zelda-games and Beyond Oasis (aka Story of Thor), since those are oriented on action. Gameplay-wise, Mario & Luigi games are great too, but there's probably too much talking in those games. South Park: Stick of Truth was another great pick by somehow else above.

Nothing against your recommendations but I'm curious why people bring up Zelda as an RPG... The only Zelda game that I think of that has RPG like elements is Zelda II for the NES. To me, the most I can say about A Link to the Past is that it is an action game that borrows some RPG elements like increasing hearts and equipping new weapons and armor. However, you could make that argument about basically any Action game these days.
