Worst Types of Levels?

Postby DaHeckIzDat » December 12th, 2017, 10:58 am

I think everybody has at least one kind of level that they hate. Not specific levels so much as the type of level it is. For me, it's poison swamps. I love the Dark Souls games, but why do they always feel the need to put in an area that kills you just by standing in it? Then you either have to waste valuable resources curing your poisoning (and then waste more every time you die) or just bite the bullet and try to survive the level and/or boss fight with your health ticking down whether you're being hit or not.

Missions where you have to protect the NPC who does everything they can to die early.

An obvious choice, but water levels where everything is slowed down to a crawl and you probably have to also contend with awkward swimming controls.

Mega Man made water levels fun by allowing Mega Man to jump extra high while underwater. Why more games haven't taken that approach, I have no idea.

Without a doubt it has to be water levels. To me, these were always the least fun, and it always seemed to be a bit of a chore to get through them.

I always hated water levels as a kid. I was scared of drowning in Sonic and just had trouble controlling it in Mario. Call me crazy but I enjoy them now. They offer a nice change of pace.

I don’t like elevator scenes with waves of bad guys in newer games. I never particularly loved them in older games like ninja turtles but I was okay with them; now I just feel like it is phoning it on by the developers.

Stealth levels where you have to restart if you're seen! This sort of thing nearly killed LoZ: The Wind Waker for me! Speaking of WW, anything that involves sailing is awful!

Arkham Asylum is an exception to this rule IMO, as it gave you checkpoints during the stealth parts with the Scarecrow.

Anyway, any part in a game that requires you to adapt to a frustrating control scheme that will take 100 times to master.

Water levels are another one, though the DKC series has proven to be a wonderful exception to this rule.
