Glossary Needs An Update

Postby VideoGameCritic » February 15th, 2018, 9:42 pm

I think it's time to update my glossary of terms page, last updated 2011!
http://videogamecritic.com/extras/info/glossary.htm

I have a few candidates:
hd/high definition
Hdmi cable
Shoryuken/Dragon punch
Hadoken/fireball
Turbo switch
Turbo boost
CGI
Shoulder buttons
Light gun
Joycon
Kinect
VR

Let me hear your ideas!

It looks good. Include a bit of VR's history; it's not a new concept. A few other missing terms are:

DLC
Loot Box
Pay to Play
Pay to Win
Freemium

Draw Distance
Collision detection
Beta release
Continue
Publisher
Developer (and 1st party, 2nd party, 3rd party developers)
Emulator/Emulation
Port (as in a ported game)
Indie game
Konami code
Metroidvania
Microtransactions
Minigame
Multiplatform
Quick Time Event (QTE)
Open World

Admittedly, I got some of these ideas from the Wikipedia list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_ ... game_terms

Some of your old definitions might warrant revisiting too. For example, the definition for "homebrew". A game built from the ground up could apply to a lot of things. I would add details like it being an unofficial release, usually programmed by a hobbyist rather than a software development company, etc. Also, "FMV", which could apply to noninteractive cutscenes too, since some games used those rather than CG cutscenes.

With your help I was able to make extensive additions to the Video Game Terms page.

Let me know about any mistakes or omissions.

Next I'm thinking about adding some pictures to better explain some of the concept. Good idea?

It could work, but my main concern would be whether it would add a look of clutter to the glossary or lead to formatting issues. Especially if there's only a few pictures. Tough to say without seeing it in action.

By the way, while I see that the "homebrew" definition was changed, I feel it's still a bit too broad. The way you have it -- a game programmed "by an independent person or team of people" -- could apply to tons of independent games that aren't homebrews, like Undertale, Axiom Verge, and other downloadable games. I would narrow it to match how you use the Homebrew Icon. I don't know the perfect definition, but it might go something like:

"A video game programmed and released for a video game system through unofficial channels, and designed by an independent person or small team of people. Most homebrew games are produced for systems that have long since been discontinued from the retail market, such as the Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis."

Good call Retro - I'm going to use your definition.
