The Ataribox is now...

Postby pacman000 » March 19th, 2018, 7:59 pm

...named the VCS. Guess Infrogrames wants me to type out 2600 each time I refer to the real VCS. :/

I can't see this being confusing in the slightest. Also, that modern controller looks awfully tacky.

Hmm, it needs a set of paddle controllers and then I'm in!

Fairly nice write up on the system formerly known as the Ataribox. Says it's supposed to be about as powerful as the switch. Has pics of the system at GDC.

CNET got a hands on demo! But the system's just a mockup...

Bits of info:

- The joystick rotates, so it can double as a paddle.

- Plans to use Ubuntu

- The delay was caused by the modern controller; it wasn't ready when they wanted to launch the crowdfunding campaign.

The lack of physical media is a show-stopper for me. Think about it - this device is going to be completely dependent on some servers that will be decommissioned after the console fails in a year.

At least if it had cartridges you could always play the paltry selection of title they do manage to release.

There's supposed to be an SD card slot. From the description it's a Linux PC in a console shell; you should be able to load new games even if Atari drops support after a year.

That's assuming it's released at all.

I can't see classic 2600 games being a selling feature, at all. I mean, these games have been released countless times, on the many different Flashback hardware releases and compilation discs on almost every modern console. I don't think people really care anymore about those old games, and the ones that do care, already have them in the above mentioned compilations, etc.

Other than than, I'm still not clear of what kind of games this is going to offer? Steam games perhaps?

To me, it looks an awful lot like the standard controller for an X Box 360. Albeit with the old Atari black and orange color scheme.
