AtariBox Meets its Goal

Within the 1st hour. (They renamed it recently; it's now the Atari VCS. I'm going to keep calling it the AtariBox to avoid confusion with the original Atari VCS, from 1977.)

To recap where this product is:

The Atari VCS (aka Ataribox) is a Linux machine with an AMD custom processor
It will support 4k resolution, and 60 fps.
You'll need your own external hard drive or SD card for storage
They plan on having their own online storefront.

They have some 'early bird' prices, but past that, a unit with one joystick controller is $279 plus shipping.
You can buy a more modern controller as well.
Estimated shipping date is summer of 2019
Comes with "Atari Vault" which are 100 2600/7800 games (and you can buy on Steam for about $10)

Here is the indiegogo url

When I posted this, they had raise close to $1.7 million dollars from about 6400 backers.

My opinion is that I would not part with my $300 for this product, but its interesting to see what it out there in the marketplace of ideas.

It's really difficult to get excited by this. They really nailed the console design as it looks sleek, modern and very ATARI. However, there simply isn't enough information to chuck a couple hundred bucks or more at this. Does it strike anyone else as strange that it's doesn't have any sort of physical media? I would think that people who have an affinity towards ATARI products would be ones that prefer carts or CDs instead of downloads. This thing will never have a retail presence and I bet after this initial windfall of money from the crowdfunding it becomes a failure shortly after it's release. These download only boxes never work. Just buy a computer and play games on Steam or GOG instead.

I want to like this, but there isn't much that makes me hopeful.

Uh, Solid State Drives exist. Thank you for acknowledging this, AtariBox.

The advertising on here gave me a link to the Atari vapour ware console.

I am reading from other Atari sources that people are being charged 6 times when they are trying to purchase 1 console so the figures could be a complete fudge and it could only be 1.5K who have put down money for this console which sounds like a bog standard Raspberry PI.

Second. They are saying about the games companies supporting it but only have one modern game working. If you watch the video on the site about Tempest you will see someone purportedly using the new atari box. Though it just looks like they are streaming it.
So that is it ONE modern game which is a port of a PS Vita game from some years back. No talk of call of duty or Madden or Fifa. No talk of Assassins creed though Ubuntu effectively rubbed out the majority of those titles.

Tempest whilst being a great game is 38 years old. The update Tempest 2000 came out 1993. 25 years later you get this update. Essentially it is still the same game with better graphics.

I do not see this being a success that is if it ever comes out at all.

If this thing can generate so much money and interest, can you imagine what a new SEGA console would do?
What the hell is Sega waiting for? They have been a rudderless ship for the last 17 years it seems.
So maybe you can't beat the PS4 or Switch. Just use your old neglected IP and print money!

I’d be down with it only if they could incorporate online multiplayer with the old games. Example: Warlords (2600) online tournaments, Kaboom versus matches, Pitfall races, etc.

Just some examples to freshen up the old games for a modern era. Tons of fun ideas.

Remember Kaboom would need a good analogue controller like the old paddle to work quick enough and it is Activision not Atari and the same for Pitfall. So do not expect to see them any time soon. Though while were are on that subject I would love to play multiplayer Space Duel and the Red Baron. Both are atari properties.

Though if there is multiplayer online it is likely to be Combat online.

I love the classics and the idea of having more competitors. But after watching this video from a couple months back, I have zero interest in the thing. My Tele-Games model 2600 will do just fine.

I agree with that video the Atari VCS is a bad scam!
